Ability to self promote, regardless of truth, is rewarded but true hardwork won't be.The good thingsEnvironment in their libraries great to work in. Most of the day to day staff also great people and great to work with barring some.
The challengesManagement of their libraries clearly out of their depth where proper management and understanding of staff resources are concerned. The red tape is unbelievable, any change (even small ones) takes months, years even. No transparency in processes. Ongoing inequity in work roster allocation. Disrespectful of their casual staff pool. Council leadership either unaware or if they are, couldn't be bothered to investigate as survey results show their libraries performing well in customer satisfaction (but that is due to those staff on the front line that are hardworking, principled and responsible doing the hard work), definitely not the result of management efforts although management gets the recognition and rewards. Very political at the top, management too busy protecting their own jobs and backs to be effective to actually 'manage'.
If you can talk the talk and polish up the 'management' and are happy to let others do the work when 'management' is not there to see, this is the place for you to get rewarded with continuous secondment and promotion opportunities. If you are hardworking and hopeful for recognition and career advancement ON MERIT, this is not the place for you.
