Welcome to the City of Swan.The City of Swan, located north east of Perth, is the largest local government by land size in the Perth metropolitan area, and has one of the fastest growing populations.The City covers an area of 1,042 square kilometres, equivalent to almost 20 per cent of the Perth metropolitan area. A beautifully diverse expanse of land, the City is rich in natural assets, including the iconic Swan River and internationally renowned Swan Valley viticulture region established in 1829.Our location, services and facilities make the City an attractive place to live. The population across our 42 suburbs stands at 168,334 in 2023, but is set to reach 300,000 by 2050.

A good opportunity to gain experience in a large organisation, though some of the systems and processes felt outdated and slow to adapt to modern ways of working
The good thingsWorking in Midland offered a great location with easy access to local services and facilities, making the day-to-day experience convenient and enjoyable. As a planner, I appreciated the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects due to its large size. Being part of a larger organisation also presents the potential to explore different roles and grow within the organisation.
The challengesI sometimes felt like just a number, with limited support or recognition. Senior roles were mostly filled through internal promotions, which could make progression feel a bit closed off. There was often a lot of pressure driven by Councillor expectations, which took up significant time and resources.

A welcoming place, with plenty of opportunities, where diversity is celebrated.
The good thingsA large organisation with plenty of opportunities to learn and develop across departments with secondment opportunities promoted and encouraged. Great flexibility with working hours including RDO accruals and work from home. Wonderful, diverse staff dedicated to community - many friendships formed.
The challengesWhen I first started the culture was not so great in many teams. Significant improvements have been made to address this for many areas, with a couple of departments still a work in progress - but progress is being made which is great to see.
