My experience at Daiso was disappointing due to unprofessional management, poor communication, and the abrupt, disrespectful dismissal of employees without notice.
The good thingsWorking at Daiso initially offered a good opportunity to develop my retail and customer service skills. The team atmosphere was generally friendly, and I enjoyed interacting with customers and being part of store openings.
The challengesHowever, the grand opening at Shopping Centre in Outer Melbourne revealed deeper issues within the company. Poor management and lack of proper planning made the process chaotic and stressful. Despite working hard, I was often mistreated and ignored by management, who failed to acknowledge my efforts or address concerns. The marketing manager was especially dismissive, creating a hostile work environment where staff input was disregarded, and many workers, including myself, felt belittled. On top of that, the overly strict policies added unnecessary pressure. The situation culminated in my abrupt dismissal, along with a few others, without any prior notice or explanation, highlighting the company’s lack of care for its workers.

Lots of work for a few weeks, got ghosted afterwards.
The good thingsFriendly people and a productive, challenging environment.
The challengesWas employed as part of a new store, lots of (too many) people hired and lots of work to do in the first few weeks of setup. After the setup was complete however then I was given zero shifts and no explanation or contact about why. I wasn't even given any basic training.

A good workplace to kickstart or to earn some income while studying.
The good thingsGreat colleagues and team work
The challengesThe employee perks aren't so good. The owner of the shop needs to be more considerate, especially for the safety of the staffs. We need a security guard!

Awful. Out of all retail places never work at Daiso. They over work you for so little pay and expect you to be able to have the store in tip top shape with only two people closing. The head people are the worst people you can ever work with.
The good thingsThe people you work with

Fun until you realise you're going to be micro-managed. Also don't expect any perks.
The good thingsIs working with amazing people with the same interest in Japanese culture. Also understanding the products and their purpose.
The challengesHaving to up sell constantly and meet their unrealistic targets. Dealing with lack of communication from managers and also unprofessional conducts that HR won't take seriously. Don't feel discouraged if they tell you you're replacable.

The challengeslots of strict rules, manager can be blunt, condesending and inconsistent with what they want/ expect you to do. Shift leader role is stressful and not worth the pay

Don't believe the anything they say about career development. Daiso has a tendency to hire a way too many new casuals for new store openings then dump them to other overstaffed stores. There is zero career development the only Full timers are managers.
The good thingsPay is according to General Retail Award 2010. Because the Head office is Australian they pay you properly.
The challengesTrying to maker a career out of Daiso is impossible. Don't know why they bother making a careers page in their website. What a joke.

Working for the money, not for the job.
The good thingsImmense variety and they were always getting new products in that were interesting. Floor staff were friendly and helpful. Closing/opening shifts.
The challengesSales targets and KPIs were more important than customer satisfaction and employee acknowledgement. Bare bones training. Working under high pressure- not from customers but from management. Management had poor communication skills. Few teamwork opportunities- mostly solitary work.

The challengesManagement are clueless about store operations and pay and behave unprofessional in front of employees. There is no job security. Teamwork is not encouraged.

It is what you want to make of it
The good thingsIf you know why you applied for the job, you are more than likely to stay. Being a variety store there are over 130,000 products to organise. It is both fun and challenging work. The work environment requires you to be proactive and self managed the majority of the time, which positively means you can have the prerogative to organise work in your own way to drive the results. Line managers are patient and knowledgeable with much wisdom to gain working alongside them if you have the chance. Those looking for self development and 'me' management will find working in this space highly innovative with much room for new ideas.
The challengesAs the company grows, much is to be standarised. The journey is a great one and if you are determined, you will be involved.

Good for experience! Not for long term.
The good thingsDaiso is a good starting point for a job. It is beneficial to work there to get your '3 years of experience' so you can apply to other places. You work a range of different things like stock, recovery and, registers, so you learn a lot. Most staff are friendly. Our store always took pride in how it looked and always got compliments on cleanliness and good visual looks.
The challengesNot good for the long term. When taking time off for work or education management did not seem happy about it. Sometimes important information wasn't relayed to some staff until later.
