Outdated and dysfunctional. Not worth your time
The good thingsThe diversity of lovely people or different backgrounds, ages and cultures.
The challengesThe system used to fulfil online orders is dysfunctional and outdated. Staff spend hours searching disorganised back rooms with no RFIDs. While customers don’t see this, the lack of organisation severely impacts efficiency. I was questioned by the loss prevention team for alleged theft, which was both false and absurd. This was laughable given the store’s poor security: many items lacked security tags, exits were poorly monitored, and customers could easily leave with unpaid items. Back-room areas, particularly luxury beauty, also lacked cameras or proper security, making it easy for high-value items to be pocketed. Rather than addressing these flaws, management chose to falsely accuse staff. Although I was initially welcomed by my team, it became clear my role was largely redundant due to outdated systems. Many long-standing staff appeared resistant to new employees, creating an unwelcoming environment that discourages new ideas and growth.

Not as glamorous as you would think
The good thingsHearing the daily announcement to advise the store is closed
The challengesThe pressure to get customer’s details every single time you are putting a sale through. The lack of support from managers who seem to spend time together in departments that they don’t look after The managers always too busy when you need them, but when you look around and they are busy all together going out for snacks all day long

The challengesManagement and some older staff were really horrible to work for, it's very clique based at David Jones, they act above you, make up rumors and trash talk you constantly. I had a snitch tell me everything they were saying, It was extremely bad for mental well-being, definitely reconsider working here. It will mess you up. Made me sick going there.

The other people on the floor with you were all great, I just wish management was better.
The good thingsThe people I worked with were all lovely, I felt as if the team was close, the overall work was easy and most people were friendly
The challengesThe management was not good, They were rude, didn't know how to encourage staff properly and relied on a negative chart to try to get people to do more which worked in the opposite way. They also expect too much for so little.

Stuck in the past and incapable of changing to stay relevant for the future
The good thingsDiscount is actually fairly generous
The challengesStore management couldn't manage their way out of a wet paper bag Store/senior managers constantly overstep and harrass staff, almost daily throwing around accusations of staff theft Male managers are ostrasized and rarely listened to Infrastructure management is non existant Pay is incredibly low compared to similar roles - pay that was advertised and discussed during interview process was actually very misleading

The good thingsI enjoyed the free products.
The challengesI was thinking back about my life and it brought me to one particular memory. It was about my second week working at David jones I was 19. I’m 29 now. An old family friend came into David Jones with her boyfriend she was only about 17, I had known her since she was about 5. We were talking I was happy to see her and then her and her boyfriend went upstairs to level 2. Then I saw them again on their way out, I said bye and they left. 2 minutes later security approached me and said the pair of them had stolen something. They then implied that I had something to do with it because they saw me talking to them and said if I did NOT get them to come back I would be fired. I said that’s my family friend I was just saying hello. They told me I had to contact her and get her to come back, or they would call the police and have me explain it…so I messaged her on Facebook. I was upset because the security made me believe she stole something and threatened my job so I asked her please come back I said why did you steal they are threatening my job. 5 minutes later the girl and her boyfriend came back. WITH A RECEIPT. The boyfriend purchased a wallet. She was so upset with me. She was yelling at me for accusing them (understandable.) I was disgusted with myself that I let those absolute morons in security think they could do that to someone without clear evidence of something actually being stolen. She was so upset and i absolutely understand. It is actually against the law, what happened and the way it happened is against the law. I tried to apologise to the girl but she never spoke to me again. Ever, even after 10 years. Even her mum hates me too, and I’ve known them since she was 5. Thinking back now I am actually disgusted. The security were two Oafs. Making me message her, accusing them without clear evidence, implicating my involvement and threatening my job because you are too stupid to figure it out yourself is against the law. I just thought I’d write this so David Jones can see. I still continued to work there for a while, but it was always just instilled in me from that point on I hated the operation in its entirety. It was my second job and I needed the money and enjoyed the perks which was free products at training. That’s it.

    Management is super toxic company-wide
The good thingsMost of the regular sales staff on the floor are friendly and fun to work with. Great discounts
The challengesMANAGEMENT!!!! As many other reviews have stated (and I wasn't surprised to see that it was in multiple locations) the management style of this company is so toxic. The company could be successful, with their aim to be the Australian destination for high-end fashion and to give customers a pampered experience (there are still customers who crave that) but they do have a company-wide management style issue. There are just so many managers on big paychecks in the company who don't seem that necessary. Our concession companies (brands that rent space in David Jones but don't work for us) constantly comment on this. I'm not shocked the company is struggling when the people in management seem to take their roles for some perceived idea of prestige instead of actively working to fix issues or help their team achieve. They are a reactionary company. The solution to problems is to tell off the person who works under them. Higher-up managers tell off the managers in stores, and then those store managers tell off sales staff. During in-store events, we've literally had head office management stand around chatting in our sales department while drinking champagne and blocking customers from getting to the cash register or getting off the escalators. They then wordlessly handed their empty glasses to the sales staff passing by who were helping customers. I feel like this example perfectly sums up the snooty attitude of the management.

Don’t waste your time - not many customers anymore, it’s the last few years of a business that was once great.
The good thingsGood brands - people only work here for the discount
The challengesBusiness is not doing well. No real future for growth or advancement. Very ‘clicky’ female leadership team.

    Would never work here again
The good thingsGood co-workers and customers
The challengesVery poorly organised and managed store. Very passive aggressive or openly hostile managers who make workers uncomfortable and treat their staff like they hate them eg. Barking orders at staff in front of customers, being rude to customers because they thought they were above serving them, literally hiding in a clothes rack trying to 'catch' staff doing something they didn't like. It's actually ridiculous people with so few social skills are managing people.

From extremely amazing to very poor - rollercoaster
The good thingsgreat opportunity for career development when you get a good manager, it is really great and you can thrive in this place
The challengestoo much emphasis on credit card sales, to a point where it overshadows the rest of your hard work - also leads to individuals being promoted not because of their people management skills but because of their ability to drive credit card sales also being told by senior management not to have gotten a promotion because of children is very disappointing

The classy atmosphere of David Jones taught me so much about customer service & retail. I expanded my knowledge of operating a cash register checking for stock out the back, recommending products, and learned how to make shopping experiences feel curated and personal.
The good thingsThe customers were friendly and polite, creating a wonderful environment for work. My co-workers and managers were so bright and amazing at what they did!
The challengesLoss of stock was an issue, so the training for these scenarios was very thorough. We always reported any losses as soon as they were discovered.

Overall great company and role, would work here again
The good thingsMy immediate team was great, as well as my wider department Staff discounts, annual staff incentive bonus, regular development plans and 1:1 meetings with managers - shows they really care for your success Office was new, great hybrid working model, (5 days in, 5 day WFH)
The challengesPay is in package, not plus super (always read the fine print!) Depending on what function you have, the deadlines and workload can be a lot Systems and IT bit outdated, but manageable Parking wars - not enough car spots so you must battle it out on the booking systems every week Could have communicated redundancy better

Stay away, not as great as it seems.
The good thingsDouble discount days, working from home options, flexible working hours, car park and good coffee in the Botanica area.
The challengesExtremely poor, condescending management. Payroll and I.T are quite slack, it will take them over a week to get back to you if you have any issues. They pay is monthly, the company in general will give you a hard time. Worst company I have ever experienced, or worked for. Was promised a certain salary in the initial interview stages, but was finalised a massive pay cut as promised.

    Great people but incompetent leaders
The good thingsThere were great people to work with plus the staff discounts on high end brands.
The challengesThere were several individuals in management that would make staff walk on eggshells and their attitude made it a stressed inducing work environment to be in. High turnover that left lack of support for remaining staff on the floor.

The good thingsStaff discounts are great!
The challengesDealing with management! Nasty pieces of work. It's like walking on eggshells all day. Very little training also. Thrown into the deep end. Sales don't seem to matter as much as selling the AMEX card and logging customer details at every sale.

Moderate stress-level but management wasn't great
The good thingsIt was nice to work in a store that stocked many Australian brands and I got to interact with many customers. There wasn't the same pressure of meeting budgets as most of the job was based around assisting customers in the fitting rooms for a shorter period of time, the focus being on completing transactions at the register.
The challengesManagement was pretty incompetent for the most part. I had 4 different managers and they were all extremely disorganised and very much took out their frustrations on the employees.
