Wow these other reviews are brutal
The good thingsReally supportive direct manager and team. Lots of career progression ops. Best professional development I've ever had in a job - a whole library of sessions to book into yourself.
The challengesI don’t know why but uni’s love a restructure. It’s a complex organisation but once you’re in I think it opens up lots of progression and secondment opportunities.

"hygiena effect" not only discourages genuine collaboration but also creates a perception of unfairness.
The good thingsSome nice people to work with.
The challengesThere appears to be an imbalance in how opportunities and recognition are distributed within the team. Those who consistently escalate minor issues — often unnecessarily — tend to receive more visibility and favorable treatment from senior management.

Enjoying working at Deakin - great perks.
The good thingsExcellent pay, additional paid leave over xmas and easter, flexible work hours, extra super, EA pay increase each year, WFH, great team and manager - our new structure is not perfect, but heading in the right direction - exciting times for us.
The challengesDon't like that we have had 3 restructures in 3 years, but with change comes opportunity. Just depends on how you look at it.

A great employer, you would be hard pressed to find better!
The good thingsFlexibility, the opportunity to have impact and work in a vibrant and dynamic space with great people and a huge variety of professional development opportunities that are supported by managers. The benefits and remuneration are also great!
The challengesTh challenges with my work always lead to learning opportunities.

From great to toxic within 5 years, not the place to be now
The good thingsSome people are great, as you can see from other reviews it was much nicer before 2020
The challengesManagemant are terrible at the senior levels, only worried about their own glory rather than making anything better. Workload is massive, you get paid well but they make you work longer hours for it

    Not great but good benefits.
The good thingsGood benefits: super, salary, extra leave over Christmas and easter. The grounds, the facilities, the flexibility to wfh. If you are someone who just works for a salary, you'll be ok.
The challengesWay too many middle managers who have no idea what they're doing, don't lead, don't give direction, just count their cash. Things are so slow, people cruise along under the radar doing the bare minimum, it's not a dynamic workplace, and there's little autonomy or freedom in the role.

Consistently Unsure if You Still Have a Job
The good thingsNice campuses. That's about it.
The challengesNo job security. Deakin doesn't care for people, have ruined culture. It was a miserable place to work with zero feeling of safety. Don't work here

    Toxic Management - difficult culture
    The good thingsBeautiful campuses.
The challengesVery political organisation. People have been here for ages, so they have formed friendships and cliques. No opportunities for progression - it's all allocated to friends. Very toxic culture. Specially in the University Services Portfolio. Lots of restructures.

Management and staff are micro managers and belittle you if you are not a good fit for their work environment.

Never given any opportunities to have career development. Was promised 1 on 1 development for 3 years and never happened. I had to work outside my normal hours due to a colleague was allowed to go on holidays but was not allowed to claim time in lieu.
    The good thingsHelping students, flexible
The challengesManagement, No career development, lockers. Managers liking to say no you can't do this and can't do that. Lack of training from managers everything I learned was from a senior colleague and the modules.

It's a great place to work at, rest assured. Just be careful of all the many calls you will have to deal with at all at once.
The good thingsExcellent salary. Always reachable management. Counselling for staff. Reflections for staff. Easily able to take days off for serious issues.
The challengesThe phone system. The tracking student system could be improved.

I would rather work in a mine with a headtorch and a pick axe in Columbia
The good things(this is with Deakin Residential Services) - Clocking Off - Bonding with other staff over the absolute mess of a workplace
The challengesResidential Services - - No feedback accepted - No possibility for career growth - Clique groups with staff who demoralise other staff - No regard or recognition for hard work - 'Just a friendly reminder' - High, HIGH turnover rate

The challengesResidential services had to be one of the worst workplaces I’ve stepped foot into. Previous reviewer is spot on in regards to staff turnover , awful management and HR turning a blind eye. In 4.5 years I was there, they went through over 40 casuals.

Inclusive, encouraging with great perks and career development opportunities.
The good thingsThe inclusive and friendly culture. The modern systems and innovation. The environment of progress, change and development (personally and institutionally).
The challengesDue to high levels of company innovation change is a constant which can be challenging. I.e once you get used to a system or process a new one is implemented.
