Spent years of my life here and was treated as nothing but a number. Wouldn't recommend this job.
The good thingsI enjoyed the aviation environment
The challengesWon’t be able to upskill unless you become friends with managers, managers dont really care about employees and their safety/health and overall just a toxic work culture

Rampant health and safety hazards with concerning rostering principles.
The good thingsI have worked in multiple customer service roles and passengers (by comparison) are not as difficult to deal with. This is an active role so it will keep you physically fit, and interacting with people from all over the world keeps you quite engaged and alert. It truly has the potential to be a balanced and fulfilling role if management allocated their resources properly and perhaps considered a more professional provider for their casual staff.
The challengesEquipment is not only scarce but poorly maintained. Passengers with less obvious mobility issues who have booked services are forced to walk long distances or carry their own luggage due to a ridiculous shortage of staff and wheelchairs. Staff try their best with the limited equipment but receive zero support from management. Risking your physical health and the potential injury of passengers is not worth it, and as such, many move on from this role fairly quickly. The few long standing staff that remain are personalities that would not be hired or tolerated elsewhere. Rosters are released on a daily basis over a social media messaging platform - so you best not be working or engaged between the hours of 1-3pm if you want to secure a shift for the following day.

Avoid and try to get employment direct with airline (VA or QF)
The good thingsAirport environment and exposure to airline operations.
The challengesPay rates are low and shift lengths are generally short, often around 4 hours. Although roles are advertised as part-time (20 hours per week), this usually requires working five days a week, which limits flexibility and makes it difficult to supplement income. Management is unorganised and often unhelpful, with poor communication and limited on-the-ground support. Training is inadequate, leaving staff underprepared for customer-facing and operational situations. Workplace culture can be challenging, with some colleagues being rude or abrupt. Having previously worked directly for airlines, it is disappointing to see how much service standards have declined since COVID, particularly in outsourced ground handling. Uniforms are not provided for the first three months, requiring staff to purchase their own suit, and employees must also pay for their own medical, creating additional upfront costs.

I finally understand why the turnover is so high.
The good thingsMeeting customers from diverse backgrounds and being able to assist them through the airport. The shifts are only 4-5 hours long but you get a decent amount of steps in that one shift.
The challengesRecurrent issues with payment and management. If you want to be paid on time and accurately, this is not the place for you. Management does not set a great example for workers and there is very minimal communication: larger issues are glossed over while insignificant issues are highlighted so it looks like they are at least doing something.

A stepping-stone opportunity to get into the industry but don’t be pressured to stick around
The good thingsIf you’re good at your job, and you’re available to be flexible, it’ll get you ahead.
The challengesThe new EBA is not as cracked up as it is to be, particularly when you’re working with colleagues who are on old EBAs earning $15/hr more on the base rate for the same role. The training for each role is very subjective, which can leave you vulnerable to making mistakes. You’re constantly feeling rushed to get the flight out on time, even if it means bending or breaking rules, knowingly or unknowingly until it’s too late.

Unfortunately, I experienced a lack of support from some leading hands, who seemed to support workers who literally have their hands in their pockets.!!! Good Luck ^^
The good thingsThe pay is acceptable
The challengesThey DO NOT care for your welfare. They care about motivational pretty posters. The demands of the job outweighs the benefits. You will be working any day, any hour and all public holidays. You will SACRIFICE/ABANDON your life, wife, family and friends.

Disappointing, Failure and promotion based on favouritism just RUN!!!
The good thingsmet some good people
The challengesPromotion Based on Connections: Advancement in the company relies more on relationships with management rather than formal qualifications or performance. Unstructured Work Hours: Employees typically work fewer than 20 hours a week unless they actively request more from management. Informal and Gossip-Driven Culture: The workplace atmosphere is akin to high school, with a lot of gossip and informal interactions influencing professional dynamics. Inadequate Resources: There are significant resource shortages, such as insufficient accommodations for passengers needing wheelchairs, leading to unrealistic demands on them. Another thing is lets say a passenger goes and complains to management. The management 100% will not support they will always support the passenger even if you follow the policy rules etc...

Worst job I have ever done in aviation or worst company. Will never apply there again..
The good thingsGet to see plane and working with people that matches your personality but very rare to find.
The challengesYou are lifting 30-32kgs of bags mostly by yourself or another person for 2-3 hours constantly. No help from supervisor or manager despite the amount of bags you have on the belt while other rampies just sit around inside the office waiting for you to finish loading all the bags so they can take it inside the plane. Do another offloading before your break or if you are unlucky, they will send you back to finish loading bags for the flight departing. Will take 2-3 months before being moved up to driving with the ramps. Everyday will be the same. Poor management and no career progression.

If you enjoy working at the airport & dont mind rotating shifts with a minimum wage then it may suit you otherwise there are much better opportunities out there with higher hourly rates.
The good thingsTeam are generally good & pretty helpful though sometimes you can work with difficult people.
The challengesVery demanding & physical work for a minimum wage job & management is very unhelpful & communication between management & employees is very poor.

Would be a better place to work if management supported workers more and offered full time positions.
The good thingsThe people I worked with. Management is slowly improving with more involvement with workers.
The challengesOne of my office supervisors was a micromanager that lacked people skills. Inconsistent working hours and pay. Workload can be extremely intense as there is always shortage of staff. Management is not involved with everyday operations enough.

    Resilience will get you through.
The good thingsChallenging and interesting work which is personally rewarding to gain experience within airline industry. Great supportive supervisors and team leaders that give you great mentoring due their knowledge of years of experience. Bonding strong friendships with fellow colleagues.
The challengesManagement are under supportive to majority of its work force. Too much mirco management. Some employees get away with not complying with company policies due to no structure in disciplinarian action against bad employees. No positive feedback or recognition for good employees that performance above and beyond. No career advancement, unless you're willing to destroy your own soul.
