Very fun, great for students, but ultimately not somewhere you want to be long term
The good thingsWonderful team members who I'll consider friends for a very long time. A very fun atmosphere to work in. Great regular customers who are always down for a chat about the things they're excited about.
The challengesAwful KPI culture starting within the past year or so with the advent of EB World Plus; if you aren't hitting certain levels, you'll be dumped without a thought. Upper management seems weirdly obsessed with money that isn't theirs and can be maddeningly tone deaf with their directives.

Work here as a casual, not as a manager.
The good thingsIt's fun getting to sell video games and build up rapport with return customers. Your store team members are usually good fun, so you'll make a lot of friends.
The challengesI worked here for over 10 years in different levels of sales roles and the company it's turned into is almost unrecognisable from when I started. They are much more profit driven now, jacking up prices of items made in-house to try and gouge customers out of more money. The culture wasn't like this previously. The amount of work that staff have to do is huge compared to other retail jobs, to the point where when I moved on I was shocked by the amount of work I didn't have to do in my new role. Pay is below average and only store manager's get bonuses (no 2ICs or assistant managers). I would have loved to have stayed with the company and moved into a head office role, but unfortunately they all require you do move to Queensland despite a lot of them being able to be done remotely.

You come into this job for the fun product, you stay for the amazing people.
The good thingsThe company lives up to it's values of recognition, family, accountability, integrity, vitality and sustainability. Very easy going into work everyday when you work with such amazing people, get to sell fun things to customers who you'll have things in common with. As a manager you have so much freedom on how you choose to run your store. The most beautiful people you'll ever meet are in higher management, operations and administration. Extremely down to earth and take mental health and complaints very seriously. Managers get flown to fun, week-long conferences with gaming and technology vendors. Bonuses can be achievable if you put in the hard work of developing your team. If you value a happy, fun, inclusive and caring work environment, EB will provide that. Leaving EB was the hardest decison i've made in my career.
The challengesWorking alone most of the time. Being on call 24/7. It's hard to shut your store for loo breaks. Christmas is exhausting.
