Don't work for EBGames if you want open communication from higher ups as they don't care about you.
The good thingsThe work itself was repairing and refurbishing consoles and controllers and was extremely enjoyable. I was very good at it and maintained my KPI's even as I was still learning.
The challengesCommunication between staff if there is issues as I was told I was not a good fit for the team and they refused to give more information. They only care about their own friends. It's a big club of people who know each other and if you aren't one of them they don't like you and will get rid of you after using you.

A cool place to work if you're prepared to sacrifice certain things
The good thingsYour colleagues and the people that work alongside you are amazing. The opportunity to work in gaming and pop culture is good fun. There are a load of fun brands to work with and campaigns to be a part of. It is fast paced and enjoyable.
The challengesThe culture is not geared towards growth or learning and you're instructed to stay in your lane. Senior Management are disengaged and disinterested in staff engagement. If you're on the outside, you're out and will never get in. EB Games are also very inflexible with pretty much everything, whether you're suggesting a change, trying to be innovative or asking for understanding that comes with the challenges of family life that sometimes arrive.

Your team has everything to do with how you'll fare.
The good thingsGood staff discounts, casual environment, can easily do something else with your life and work here at the same time. It's basically a toy store now, so showing little kids cool stuff is good for the heart.
The challengesKPIs are King. Training leaves a lot to be desired. 2 supervised shifts before being left alone is daunting with such a complex and outdated system combined with customers who think they're smarter than you.

A fun job for people who are lucky enough to get good coworkers, but UPPER MANAGEMENT IS TERRIBLE.
The good thingsWhen store managers and staff at your store are kind, understanding, fun and friendly people you love to go to work!
The challengesUpper management, from the District level and above, is inept, cold, aggressive with goals and punishing of any shortcomings. A previously chill district manager may be replaced by a cold, emotionless shell of a person who immediately sees fit to force store managers to fire dozens of their staff across every store in their region so they can "save a little on payroll". Even with my many, many years of employment, I was terminated with NO notice, with NO last shifts, all because I was "too expensive" to keep employed because I was a casual who didn't see the point in trying to become an Assistant Store Manager or Store Manager. Almost all positions are casual positions with almost no chance of going any higher. This is also not to mention the fact that the entire branch of this company is likely to completely fall apart and shut down within the next 1 - 3 years. Steer clear of this employer!

    Picking and Packing Role

It’s like a game of who’s the fastest pick packer except everyone is on the same team helping
The good thingsI enjoyed packing items either it be on the belt or usually the trolly. The team is a lot very welcoming and friendly, everyone is willing to help.
The challengesIt is very repetitive and fast paced so sometimes trying to pick and pack organised may be a little difficult.

pretty great until 2024, the company took a serious turn away from any interest in staff experiences
The good thingsThe staff and most of the customers are lovely and a joy to give my energy to.
The challengesHQ is pushing more and more onto the shoulders of managers and requiring ridiculous standards of all staff.

Champagne aspirations on a beer budget
The good things- The staff were personable and friendly. - 20% staff discount (30% on certain items) is generous if you're in the market to purchase anything from EB.
The challengesLack of hours - I'm being offered 3 hours per week, and it's been like that since the second week of me being at EB, despite being praised by the manager for hitting KPIs so early in my employment - performance does not equal reward in terms of hours. Since my second week, I was looking for other jobs and have just taken on another which is already exceeding the hours from EB so I'll likely resign this week. It's such a shame because I was so keen to work for EB but have just felt like I've been absolutely taken for a ride - if a position only offers 3hrs a week, give it to a school student for some work experience, not a fully grown adult with financial responsibilities, because $100 a week doesn't cover it for me.

eh... if you want to be picked on by higher ups... thats your place to be at...
The good thingsThe friendships that were made there and the environment that was carried through was alright
The challengesManagement was definitely mentally draining... I was constantly being singled out and was picked on and targeted by managers for no reason...

    Fantastic workplace, too little time.
The good thingsI really enjoyed the work environment. I felt comfortable with and listened to by my coworkers.
The challengesI did not get many shifts. You require an extensive knowledge of gaming and popular culture, including keeping up with new games, upcoming releases etc.

Very fun, great for students, but ultimately not somewhere you want to be long term
The good thingsWonderful team members who I'll consider friends for a very long time. A very fun atmosphere to work in. Great regular customers who are always down for a chat about the things they're excited about.
The challengesAwful KPI culture starting within the past year or so with the advent of EB World Plus; if you aren't hitting certain levels, you'll be dumped without a thought. Upper management seems weirdly obsessed with money that isn't theirs and can be maddeningly tone deaf with their directives.

Great People and Memorable Events, But Undervalued Effort and Limited Growth
The good thingsFor the most part, the people you work with are genuinely lovely and customers were generally better than what you would get in other retail stores. Days went by quickly, and having the ability to plan and execute midnight launches was a fantastic experience.
The challengesWorked full-time hours as a casual, planning events & launches to support overwhelmed managers doing excessive hours. Pay was below industry standard. Unpaid overtime was expected under the “family” culture, with no compensation. Growth was limited, and suggestions for improvement were dismissed.

all in all I really enjoyed working with this team and have great experience with this company.
The good thingsloved the store culture and the team I worked with, I also loved the independence and trust I was given with in my job description.
The challengesonboarding was delayed and there where issues to presented my first shift, some of the systems were difficult for (keyboard/ shortcut based rather than touch screen base). never the less I adapted quickly and was able to be independent in my position very quickly which I enjoyed.

If you decide to work at EB Games, you will need to find your own way to navigate your progression. The pay is low and there is little to no employee benefits. You get a 20% games and merch and a 2% - 5% off vouchers through their employee benefits program when you spend $100+ at selected retailers. Management do what they are told and don't look for opportunities to better the business. The people you work with are nice however, are often disgruntled or are fine with being paid less.
The good thingsThe people that you work with are great for the most part. If you work in the head office, there are a lot of really great and friendly people there. Stores are also filled with some great people however, I also had some unpleasent people that I had to work alongside.
The challengesThe challenge this company faces in the current market is its low salary. They advise that their rates are competitive for their company size however, many other retailers and office jobs will pay higher with their entry roles than a senior role at EB Games. Management holds old and out dated management styles often asking you to provide unpaid work under the guise of 'reasonable overtime'. When challenged on this they will often fall back to their family ethos but will refuse to pay any compensation. There is very little room for growth and the idea of 'do what you need to do to make this work, nothing more' is fostered throughout most departments. When liasing with other departments on how improvements can be made, these suggestions and ideas are often shut down from management for unknown or unusual reasons. Office politics are rampart throughout all departments. This was demotivating and fostered a negative attitude amongst staff of all levels. Social cliques are present and can result is both positive and negative experiences. It's not what you know at EB Games that will lead to your success, but who you know and who likes you. Most staff will work under the retail assistance award regardless if they work in IT or Marketing. There are different levels to this award and you must agree to sign your rights to the correct pay for your job title away to begin work.

    Not a good first job.
The good thingsFriendly customers and colleagues.
The challengesA manager who didn't train me the same as others, singled me out, cut me out of slack before my employment was up over a mistake of me missing a shift when I had to rush my cat to the vet and didn't have data, cut my shifts, and didn't communicate after promoting communicating.

While having EB Games on your resume is valuable in the short term, remaining there too long may hinder long-term career progression.
The good thingsDuring my time at EB Games, I had the privilege of forming lasting friendships with some incredibly talented and dedicated colleagues. Although many of them eventually left for better opportunities that offered more competitive pay, work-from-home flexibility, and a healthier work-life balance, their support and camaraderie were the highlights of my experience.
The challengesOne of the most significant challenges at EB Games was the high turnover rate, which was not adequately addressed by management. As more employees left, the workload was consolidated and redistributed among remaining staff without any clear plans for expansion. Opportunities for personal development and career progression were limited and often appeared reserved for those willing to take on more work with fewer resources. Additionally, the company continues to rely on outdated and questionable systems. Despite having knowledgeable staff whose role is to understand the products and hardware, management frequently disregards their expertise. Instead of leveraging this insight to improve efficiency and performance, leadership tends to stick to their own views and processes, often at the expense of both time and money. This disconnect has contributed to an environment where progress is stifled and valuable resources are underutilized.

Your passion for gaming, or pop culture isn't worth wasting it working at eb games
The good thingsThe team discount The people you work with
The challengesGetting maybe one shift a week yet expected to meet KPI's for managers to get there bonus but unless your amazing you get no bonus apart from a KPI pin. There's absolutely 0 career growth, and being left alone on the shop floor all day unless you get a 3 hour lunch cover. I honestly would suggest anyone to work for eb games unless your in a store manager position

Work here as a casual, not as a manager.
The good thingsIt's fun getting to sell video games and build up rapport with return customers. Your store team members are usually good fun, so you'll make a lot of friends.
The challengesI worked here for over 10 years in different levels of sales roles and the company it's turned into is almost unrecognisable from when I started. They are much more profit driven now, jacking up prices of items made in-house to try and gouge customers out of more money. The culture wasn't like this previously. The amount of work that staff have to do is huge compared to other retail jobs, to the point where when I moved on I was shocked by the amount of work I didn't have to do in my new role. Pay is below average and only store manager's get bonuses (no 2ICs or assistant managers). I would have loved to have stayed with the company and moved into a head office role, but unfortunately they all require you do move to Queensland despite a lot of them being able to be done remotely.

I miss the people and the customers, but the dead wood in management needs addressing.
The good thingsThe people you work with day to day are nice, the customers are mostly great. Wide variety of product to work with, always plenty to do in a day.
The challengesZero career progression due to inertia of upper management. Average time of a store manager is ~10 years, area and state managers for ~20 years. Promotion into support roles that could be done remotely instead require moving to Brisbane into an office role. Work life balance for management or higher is severely tilted to the company. Ongoing issues with uniform supply. Salary is below market, and stores are severely understaffed.

The good thingsGreat team culture, management actually engages with staff. No politics or hierarchy. Great staff discount.
The challengesOnly take on employees on a casual basis; work hours cannot be guaranteed so not suitable for primary bread winner, however great for uni students or someone looking for a "hobby" in the gaming/pop culture space.

Great people, not so great budget from Head Office with not great hours.
The good thingsThe people you work with are fantastic and you quickly development a great environment to work with friends.
The challengesCurrently the lack of shifts makes it a job that is not good to rely on for your main source of income. As a senior sales associate you are currently only 1 shift a week with only fortnightly pay.

You come into this job for the fun product, you stay for the amazing people.
The good thingsThe company lives up to it's values of recognition, family, accountability, integrity, vitality and sustainability. Very easy going into work everyday when you work with such amazing people, get to sell fun things to customers who you'll have things in common with. As a manager you have so much freedom on how you choose to run your store. The most beautiful people you'll ever meet are in higher management, operations and administration. Extremely down to earth and take mental health and complaints very seriously. Managers get flown to fun, week-long conferences with gaming and technology vendors. Bonuses can be achievable if you put in the hard work of developing your team. If you value a happy, fun, inclusive and caring work environment, EB will provide that. Leaving EB was the hardest decison i've made in my career.
The challengesWorking alone most of the time. Being on call 24/7. It's hard to shut your store for loo breaks. Christmas is exhausting.

The experience and training I did manage to get helped me move on and get a much more fulfilling, better paid job that does everything I was missing out on.
The good thingsPeople lateral to you are usually amazing, you make a lot of friends. It gives you a stepping stone into a proper job in the industry you're interested in. Additionally provides experience and, if you can make some, references.
The challengesThe salary generally far below industry average for most, if not all positions. Progression is locked behind who you know, regardless of how much you do. Your personal life comes second to the company in the eyes of upper management (regardless of the situation). Work Life Balance is tilted in the extreme towards the company.

Great people at a store level, constant pressure to perform duties outside of your pay range. No monetary appreciation for exceptional performance.
The good thingsWas super awesome to work here while I just moved up, and met some absolutely amazing people.
The challengesThere's no incentive to perform well as staff that achieve exceptionally high KPI results are rewarded with a note that says "Thanks" while upper management reaps the benefits of your hard work through bonuses and merchandise supplied by publishers.
