Overwork, under-valued, underpaid and taken advantage of.The good thingsThe only “good thing” was the people you made friends with along the way if you were lucky enough to get past the internal politics and they didn’t leave immediately after starting. But this is not a good thing about the workplace, it is just a byproduct of it and you essentially end up trauma bonding with your coworkers to at least make the workplace tolerable. Even prisoners make friend in prison. That doesn’t make prison a good place to be… Oh and they take you bowling 1-2 times a year a “team bonding”.
The challengesThe entire setup of the business is a challenge. They will advertise for one role and you end up working a completely different one. They advertise for a “admin” position and just end up putting in your whatever department has recently lost staff in. Once they place you in a role, it can immediately change to another without question or contractural change. If you are lucky enough to last and perform well, this will be taken advantage of at all times and you will be pushed to do as much as possible. Multiple occasions of being promised a “promotion” into a new role only to be let down and nothing comes to fruition. Continuous promise of changes and improvements only for nothing to happen and any changes made are not introduced or explained on how to implement into role effectively.
There is zero efficient training provided as the training method is to be thrown in the deep to “figure it out”. Have witnessed on multiple occasions people quit the first day they start or let go within their first week because they were not “quick enough”.
To summarise the overall experience;
- No training guides or procedures
- No workplace guide lines. The less you know your rights, the better it is considered in this place
- No official role definitions or KRAs
- Responsibilities change at a moments notice without discussion
- Rules change constantly as there is no set guide. Decision are just made depending on mood that day.
- Severely unstaffed at all times
- Significantly high staff turnover
- No upper management structure or accountability
- No care or consideration for mental health & wellbeing of staff
- Expected to work beyond hours without additional pay
- No pay rises for additional responsibilities
- Not paid correctly for additional Saturday work
- No leave loading paid
- Continuous contact outside business hours/during leave even with the “Right to Disconnect” law in place
- Poor communication across departments
- Continuous buck passing as management is not wanting to take accountability or take affirmative action
This job should have not have been as stressful as it was, but due to poor business management, it will test even the most resilient and you are not regarded for any effort you put in. Beware and consider options prior to considering a role through this business.
