Great for a few months as a casual/ part time to set your toes in the fitness field. But have a plan, and don’t plan on remaining.
The good thingsGood environment for someone with a health and fitness mindset. Nice people with similar interests assuming you’re into said mindset. Big company. Members are usually very lovely.
The challengesBig company leading to poor management where no one has any power to make necessary changes. This leading to a very sterile draining environment for people with passion and drive. ‘Membership consultant’ roles are more geared towards numbers and less about people. Sales role more akin to car sales. (Not a bad thing for some personalities). But conflicts with the core of health and fitness. Smaller and very friendly Receptionists left with the job to clean gym and heavy weights whilst sales are constantly babied to gather leads with no personal autonomy. Very micro managed.

Most dysfunctional work environment you are likely to ever encounter
The good thingsAnything positive about this place is truly outweighed by the woeful lack of management
The challengesComplete lack of accountability and management in general- if anything bad behaviour gets rewarded

    Not a leading commercial gym
The good thingsPeople day to day in club were nice and friendly
The challengesNumbers orientated business with lack of any care for people. Expect people to go above and beyond in their roles for lower than living wages salaries even in management. Toxic company reputation with very high staff turnover rate and gossiping. Besides lack of care for staff it’s also reflected in the lack of care for the gyms being run down and thus lack of care towards members. Customer service is a foreign word for FF.

No growth and can be stressful
The good thingsThe team was great, all the employees were bonded together from a poor management that we had. Members were great and understanding of the job difficulties as well!
The challengesPoor management, not enough training for people in managerial roles which leads to poor leadership. Upper management is also horrible in having your back as an employee, if you give them the numbers they want to see it's great, but if you don't it's so miserable as you're in the bottom of the pyramid.

Overall a really fun place to work. A lot of perks. Would be 5 star if the pay wasn't so bad
The good thingsGreat environment to work in, an overall really fun job
The challengesIf you're in sales, they put the target up REALLY high. Mostly white men in high positions. A lot of competition

Work here if you want desperately to be in the Fitness business but don't expect to make much money or build a career.
The good thingsWorking with like minded people who place a premium on fitness.
The challengesConstant churning of management. Work scheduling is chaotic. Pressure to recruit customers. Dealing with customer complaints despite having no control over the causes. Pay rates that might be skirting the law.

Part time was great, full time was terrible.
The good thingsGreat part time job, working in the gym is a fun environment and the free gym membership is a bonus.
The challengesWorking full time you see a lot of the in-office politics and gossip (which there is a lot of). Management likes to get involved with the gossip which doesn’t help.

The challengesThe company is immensely disorganised and so sales driven that the concept of the fitness industry and lifestyle is forgotten to ensure profits.

A company that cares more about making money (sales) then its employees by only valuing how good they can sell memberships more than the person themselves or by their customer service skills and not choosing to offer training to make that person sufficien

If you are good to them, they are good to you
The good thingsMost people you work with are incredible. The work environment is very supportive, fun and challenging. Fitness First has been very good to me and has given me plenty of opportunities but I have also given a lot to them.
The challengesAlthough there are a lot of great managers, there are also some managers who need to be trained on people skills as they are othen abusing their power and don't treat their team well.

Fitness first have been called finance first the whole time I’ve been with company. That’s how they feel about potential customers and staff
The good thingsThe job was at the start chilled and fun. I was quick to realise the realty of the role.

Fun environment within a company that's lost its way.
The good thingsThe work life balance was good. The members of the club were fun and friendly.
The challengesThe business goal posts kept moving which meant many staff felt disengaged. Lack of capital expenditure especially if you work in a club outside NSW which meant an inconstant member offering. The company seems to be a bit lost in where they sit within the sector which meant it felt like you were falling behind in the industry.

The good thingsFree gym membership and a pretty laid back team and community
The challengesGenerating “leads”, especially when during the hiring process I was told this wasn’t going to be something I needed to do. Working at 4:45am also became very difficult.
