    Engineering Role
    Jul 2025

My time at Fyfe ended on a very disappointing note, marked by unpaid entitlements and unprofessional behaviour from HR that left me with a lasting sense of distrust toward the company.
The good thingsI started my role at Fyfe as a structural engineer, bringing with me several years of experience in the industry. During my time there, I had the opportunity to work on a number of complex projects and collaborate with some very talented and supportive colleagues. It was a fast-paced environment, and I learned a lot about managing tight deadlines and delivering large-scale engineering solutions under pressure. However, after about a year and right in the middle of delivering a major project, I was suddenly made redundant, along with others in our team. It came as a shock, especially considering the effort and commitment we had put into our work. What followed was even more difficult; the HR representative handled the situation in a deeply unprofessional way, even going so far as to call my partner early in the morning and later contacting me repeatedly in a similar manner.
The challengesDespite my commitment, I was made redundant without notice during a critical phase of project delivery, along with several colleagues. What followed was even more difficult, an HR representative began calling my partner early every morning in a threatening manner, and later directed the same behaviour toward me. On top of that, I was never paid for 10 days of unused annual leave. These events made the ending of my time there deeply disappointing and highlighted the importance of respectful and professional workplace culture.

I started at Fyfe as a graduate engineer and haven't looked back since. The office has grown significantly, and Fyfe has provided me with numerous opportunities to grow alongside the company. I've managed and delivered a variety of technical projects, including secondments into large-scale projects for owner-operator teams. Looking forward to seeing where it takes me next!
The good thingsThe company culture is fantastic, with a very social team that ensures a great work-life balance. The wide variety of engineering projects keeps the work engaging, and management is always willing to offer new challenges if you show interest. Company polos also look great.
The challengesThe workload is generally high, as expected in a design consultancy, which can sometimes be challenging to manage. However, this experience is valuable for developing a strong work ethic and learning to collaborate effectively as a team to achieve common goals.

An agile, multi-disciplinary firm with a great culture and people!
The good thingsGreat people, culture, and challenging work. The firm is large enough to manage significant projects but, as a mid-tier firm, agile enough to pivot when projects require it. Career development and training are priorities. Career progression is on the radar for go-getters.
The challengesAs a multidisciplinary firm with services spanning engineering, environmental, planning, and survey, you need to be proactive to ensure you get out of your silo and reap the benefits of identifying integrated service opportunities. Client deadlines occasionally slip, so being on your game is good.

Supportive workplace that nurtures professional growth while also having a fun social environment
The good thingsI started part time as an Undergraduate Engineer at Fyfe and the team were really supportive of my academic commitments, whilst also providing me with invaluable insights into the world of engineering and a platform for personal and professional development. The workplace has a collaborative culture with supportive colleagues and a fun social environment. Management is also approachable with a willingness to seek feedback and have a strong focus on employee professional development.
The challengesSome of the work can be technically challenging and deliverable deadlines can be hard to meet.

Fyfe fosters the development of undergrads, making it a great place to work
The good thingsHaving started with Fyfe as a fresh grad, I’ve found mentoring and support from peers to be really valuable. Fyfe offers a lot of flexibility while you're studying, this is a huge help when it comes to time management and reducing uni related stress. They also have a positive office culture, so you always feel supported and like you have someone (or multiple people) that you can ask for help, and you have the opportunity to glean wisdom from people who have been in the industry for a while, this gave me a lot of clarity on my career path and helped me develop my confidence.
The challengesSometimes with clients there can be tighter than usual timeframes, these have the potential to get stressful, but Fyfe really encourages collaboration and communication, this really streamlines the processes so it’s a lot easier to meet deadlines.

Fantastic, tight knit and welcoming team. Great change!
The good thingsThe Team I was surprised moving to Fyfe at how open and friendly a group of engineers can be. The staff seem to function as a single large team, they are close knit, welcoming and supportive. With a very flat org structure you always feel very welcome and appreciated. Internal Development I've noticed that management seeks to provide opportunity and develop skills of their team. I've seen first hand the effort spent in developing the technical skills for younger engineers. Opportunities For younger engineers I've seen Fyfe provide opportunities in secondments, field work and different engineering fields which is a fantastic development tool. Projects The projects have been a good mix of familiar and new and novel. It's also great to see the work that Fyfe have done developing new green hydrogen projects. Being able to help decarbonise our energy needs really is fantastic.
The challengesThe team has grown significantly to meet the workloads since I've started. Where inefficiencies occur, these are made up for with enthusiasm.
