    Support Worker
    Aug 2025
Geelong VIC 32203 to 4 years in the role, former employee
Started so well but then lost sight of it's purpose due to hunger for expansion and profit.
The good thingsOur clients and co workers are the best part of working for this company.
The challengesWhen I joined, the culture was very client and community focused. Staff moral was very high due to having Leaders in snr management roles who helped them feel supported, valued & that their voice mattered. But gradually, the existing snr leadership was changed & the company started chasing growth and expansion by absorbing other companies that were struggling (even interstate). This was ok at first but it soon became too excessive & as the company got bigger, they lost sight of the reason of why they existed. Many of the new senior staff that were hired in the growth and restructure periods did not seem to have prior experience in the sector & the focus and culture of the company at a senior level shifted dramatically. The leadership lost the 'heart' side of why the company existed. Staff no longer felt their positions were secure due to seeing many good staff leave or be restructured out of the organisation. There were still many good people working there when I left, but for how long?

It started out as a wonderful experience and became a nightmare.
The good thingsThe rest of the staff were really supportive of on another and they were, by and large, dedicated to their jobs and the clients that they were employed to support.
The challengesApathetic management were dedicated to filling a resume and ticking the box that says they had worked in the non for profit sector. There was no support from management for the staff. Culture of apathy from senior managers to the difficulty of their staff in doing their jobs.

    Nightmare working environment!
The good thingsgenU offers a very flexible working environment.
The challengesSenior management and the executive team are out of touch and lack competency in their roles. There is zero recognition for hard work or any chance of career progression.

Lots of opportunities. Just needs a real and 'gutsy' national focus. Currently no executive capabilities.
The good thingsExperienced executives and snr managers prior to the merger who walked the talk and valued clients and employees. Unfortunately in competing with both the state and federal NDIS Head Offices it has since been unable to adequate recruit and fill crucial positions.
The challengesA rural organisation with limited pool of quality executive and senior managers. Resulted in people with more experience and expertise in areas outside of Geelong reporting to managers with far less skills based in rural Geelong. A micro managing and 'blokey' culture based on mateship rather than results. Needs to be merged with a national agency to broaden its executive and snr management capabilities.

It has been good but it is now too big and I feel they have lost the focus of why they are there and it is all about “the dollar”....
The good thingsI have worked for this organization for over 10 years. When I started it was a good place to work. Not so sure now.
The challengesManagement are a challenge. I find that there is not enough put into mentoring new supervisors and they are expected to “just do” the work. Not enough communication by the CEO.

Great for the client, good if you want a 'job' and poor if you want a career!
The good thingsThe support work and opportunities actually provider is very good
The challengesNew leadership since September 2017 has made the work environment challenging and disheartening. The 'big stick' approach by area management showcases their true lack of leadership experience.

An essential service for giving a better life to those that need it, but you can't survive on the wage provided.
The good thingsMeeting some amazing clients and helping those that need it.
The challengesGetting enough hours per week to be able to make a basic wage. You deal with all kinds of challenging behaviours and situations. It can be very stressful one minute then easy and fun the next. Having to use your own car as a taxi for very little monetary return is not good.
