Should be an amazing place to work on paper but terrible management destroys any good culture
The good thingsFlex time policy (at the expense of being away all the time for work) Down to Earth colleagues
The challengesConstantly working away at a moments notice and having to cancel plans. How poorly managed it is run with incompetent and unaccountable managers, especially in the consulting arm Entura and the wasted expenditure. Will throw you under the bus if you challenge the status quo. Incredibly political and toxic environment and territorial amongst regions Very low morale amongst a lot of teams

The worst place I’ve ever worked.
The good thingsYou get to work on some great infrastructure…sometimes. Sense of pride to generate electricity for Tasmanians, echoed with guilt for how poorly the business is run and how much money it wastes, but won’t even buy the right tools to keep the machines generating
The challengesRun by commercial team who are running the machines into the ground, managers lie and sweep issues under ‘the rug’, majority of office staff don’t care about generation, field staff are treated poorly, no plan for the future, staff leaving in droves, MMT is the dumping ground for incompetent staff

Beware, has a high turnover of staff in the field based roles.
The good thingsThe unique history of Tasmania's power generation assets which contributed to the building and development of the nation......but that was in the past.
The challengesDo not do an apprenticeship here unless you are on major upgrades throughout your entire training. There are no role models to learn from as they cannot attract any quality trades people. This is due to management and the board having no regard for the field operations side of the business as they are more focused on red tape and pie charts than actually running and maintaining power stations. Business is grossly over staffed with incompetant people who would never survive in the real world.

Left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing...
The good thingsWas fantastic working with a great team.
The challengesTasmania have no idea of the Victorian operations and what's required. Instead of taking action to enhance or resolve issues, upper management prefer to look the other way, leading to a complete disconnect within the organisations BU's and causing staff morale to be the lowest on record.

Lots of potential but no follow through.
The good thingsPeople in the team are amazing and helped sustain me through the hard times!
The challengesExecutive leadership - too many of them, clear they aren’t working together and the politics is like being back at high school. Lots of talk about changing the culture but no follow-through. Blame based culture has existed for years - simply not safe to speak up. Expect respect campaign was brilliant but none of the leaders at the top have followed through - they do the opposite.

I was under-utilised, treated poorly, the processes prevented progress and did not improve outcomes, it was political to a fault and the management at all levels was terrible.
The good thingsThe people I worked with
The challengesThe place is very poorly managed at all levels. They talk the talk but do not WALK the walk

One of the worst places to work.
    The good thingsPay was competitive.
The challengesNot much to do or learn, slow and regressive, Management is manipulative and do not put people first. You get through years and years by not doing much and as long as you don’t challenge the status quo.

Good people in a beautiful island, working together as part of the Tasmanian social fabric.
The good thingsGreat people who were invested in the brand and company, and the ability to form strong working relationships over time. Ability to branch out and diversify work activities and roles.
The challengesAs a government business enterprise, Hydro Tas is susceptible to large policy shifts in response to federal and state political decisions. Profits cannot be retained and re-invested. This leads to short-term focus and in recent years a myopic management style has flourished.

Should be the beat place in the world to work....but it isn't.

Many years in this organisation in a variety of roles, most of it fun and rewarding.
The good thingsSocially responsible. Diverse range of career opportunities for those that seek them out. Good remuneration / packaging options. Generally a great bunch of people.
The challengesInternal politics rife, so you need to navigate around that. Micro management style in some executive level managers can be rather dis-empowering.

I had 18 years working here, some of the best times of my adult life were spent at Hydro and many great friendships made
The good thingsGreat support for families and individuals in managing work life balance. Great pay rates. Flexible working from home policies, no debit sick leave.
The challengesThe split between management and employee requires addressing urgently. This company needs to regain its 'family feel' and community spirit. This has eroded over time.
