For the most part it’s been a super chill time
The good thingsI’ve met some friends for life working here, generally feel supported and understood by my current management team, it’s generally a great chill environment though it can be crazy tiring doing face to face service
The challengesStore happiness is so varied as management varies. Still some shocking treatment of staff from senior management, staff get written up for misspeaking but others can outright pick on and demean staff under them and receive zero disciplinary action. I’ve seen some people get fired for using the wrong words but others have been employed for over ten years who are outright cruel to other staff members and get away with it. It all depends on the management team of that store.

Basic retail job, wouldn't recommend for a long time
The good thingsA mostly good team Retail Award pay
The challengesWeekly sales check-ins that amounted to little more than a tick-box exercise. Shifts removed without warning or communication when store manager pressured by area manager. Despite being a 'perk', commission rates woeful unless working in the HiFi area. Stopped providing shifts as soon as Christmas was over - little regard for people making a living. Most customers looking for a deal that didn't exist - made making commission difficult.

Get the right manager, and you will love this place - especially if you only know retail.
The good thingsUnder the correct and supportive management, this company is a great place to work.
The challengesUnder incompetent and over egotistical managers, this place is horrible.

The real on the floor workers are great. But the management on all levels needs to change.
The good thingsMy fellow workers and the job itself.
The challengesManagement and over the top safety regulations. Management not listening to floor staff concerns. Out of sight, out of mind management style.

A dream retail job plagued by internal politics
The good thingsYou get to work with some awesome and genuine people. The staff discounts were decent for what they were, especially for vinyls. Flexible with rosters and shifts. Got to meet some really cool customers.
The challengesPersonally, store management was a big issue for me. They were very cliquey, and all had different expectations of staff between each other. This is further polarised by upper management, who seem disconnected with what was happening in stores. Workload was either not enough or too much. Expectations from management was also a tad unrealistic. If you apply for an all-rounder retail team member, they will try and corner you into one department. Job can be physically and mentally taxing, but it differs from store to store.

Deceivingly cool, but it's actually hell
The good thingsMade lifetime friends, casual dress code, staff discounts, learning on the go, upbeat and fun environment if you're working with good people.
The challengesAlmost impossible to move up the ranks unless you're friends with managers. I applied for a Coordinator role at the store I worked at and after the managers interviewed all the applicants, we found out that they had already hired someone from another store who had been in the company for 3mos (and been recommended by their manager) without our knowledge -- wasted our time and gave us false hope for a promotion. There was always someone who became the favourite and was given a promotion despite their lack of experience. Understaffed, underappreciated, unrealistic KPIs when we had 1 staff member per department most days, cliquey team depending on the store, bad communication between managers and staff, and zero regard for staff's mental and physical health. It's a place where hard work isn't rewarded.

Honestly really good and fun, (other stores may be different)The managers at my location are all fun and nice. If I ever have a work or personal related issue they'll listen and help. Managers can get swapped around between stores but all of them have still been super nice. The managers do a good job managing stuff and always contact me for shifts and stuff and if you aren't able to work a shift you don't need to handle trying to find a replacement they're able to do it. (basically the managers actually do their jobs compared to a lot of other places) Even when it's super busy it tends to not be too stressful (especially for someone who get's overwhelmed easily) if you ever need a quick breather or break you're always able to go in the back for a bit and reset. co-workers have been great! Obviously there's a few who aren't as friendly but it's easy to get close with everyone and we hang out out of hours to do stuff like escape rooms Pay for me is minimum wage however we get a lot of bonuses like commission and weekly/monthly bonuses depending how well the store did. if your a casual your shifts might slow down if the store isn't doing well/not making as much money so you might just suddenly stop getting shifts but the managers try to give shifts to as many people as they can and try their best for everyone! honestly really good workplace, understanding managers and co workers, highly recommend if you're neurodivergent and take your time with stuff. All of this stuff can be different for other stores!!! But I've been lucky enough to have such an amazing team and store, and I have so many good memories while working there.

Great initial start but left alienated and jaded.Great initial start, very productive and quick progression within the group. However since January 2025 I've been met with very sporadic work and very limited communication from management who have spent the entire year cutting budgets and cutting work from people who are in need of such work in a cost of living crisis. Furthermore it doesn't quite add up when the company has continued to post eye watering profits and has in that time prioritized selling auxiliary accessories and "extended warranties" to such an extreme that it is prioritized over workers mental health. Just another company chasing the dragon and endless profits.

Fun atmosphere but can be hard to break into the many work colleague cliques.
The good thingsWork colleagues and everyday systems. Most processes were intuitive. Friendly colleagues that went out of there way to help.
The challengesManagers are not very professional and rather two faced. Not all but some of them were definitely not genuine unfortunately. Really soured the overall experience.

A welcoming cohort to work with
The good thingsThe pay and opportunity to earn money through commission was really good. Retail is a good way to earn experience with customer service, communication as well as co-operating with co-workers, JB Hi Fi offered opportunity for all of these things. My co-workers were also so friendly and welcoming.
The challengesIt can get very crowded and stressful on public holidays, school holidays as well as weekends. Lots of customers to tend to and housekeeping work in your spare time - this could also be taken as an opportunity and plus if you like keeping yourself busy.

It is definitely the best employer I've ever had and a very secure job with lots of opportunities.
The good thingsGood salary if it is busier and you make commission but heavily depends on which store you are, and which department in the store. It is very stable job and secure. Management is also good depending on which store you are.
The challengesTrying to achieve commission when sales are down. Commission structure changes from time to time. Company is focused on services over products. It is as if the products are there only to sell services. You may find at certain stores, people in management who have no experience and no idea what they are doing.

If you can get it and you want a pretty cruisy workplace, go for it. Just know you may have to look elsewhere for career growth.
The good thingsStaff discounts and live performances in the lunch room of head office frequently.
The challengesJust isn't the most room for movement up. You may get lucky and a direct manager may go on maternity leave giving you the opportunity to step up for some time, but people that are in management position have been there for a very long time and have no plan to move on.

As long as you've got a great sense of humour and like interacting with customers and wearing casual for a uniform you'll be fine.
The good thingsLove being part of team that gets me and notices when i need help. This will depend on which store and what department you get put in. The discount on products quite good and being able to take a decent amount of time off when you need it (if your casual and part time usually easier). being able to basically wear casual clothing to work is definitely a highlight of working here.
The challengesManagement depending on whether or not your manager and store manager get along or are on the same page makes a big difference. if your manager isn't good/doesn't like you might hinder your chance at more shifts if casual or wanting a contract. As said before just depends on what store you get put into. If in sales trying to reach your targets can be quite hard on the quiet days (monday - wednesday) and lack of hours if your store has a lot of full timers. After maybe 2-3 shifts of training your kinda of left to just do your own thing which can be frustrating at times especially since you never really get shown everything mostly learn as you go. price matching is a big thing and each store is different so make sure you know what stores to price match and can price match to.

If you can handle an anxious and overwhelming environment, you will be fine.
The good thingsGood discounts. Management who abide strongly by company policy, which makes discussions about pay and hours clear.
The challengesVery segregated between sales, merch and ops. Not a lot of comradery between the three. A lot of cliques between them which is hard for newcomers to face. Some contradictory messages between different supervisors on what should and shouldn't be done. Not a lot of training, poor shift communication and no farewell when contract finished.
