Good experience, bad managers, terrible pay. Only work here for a year to get some experience under you.
The good thingsPeople are good, and you don't need experience to get in the door.
The challengesThe pay rate is terrible, under industry standard. Company is not well thought out, as it has hundreds of subsidiaries, each department is its own business, and runs its business differently to the rest of the company.

Incredible team culture, room for progression and learning, whilst also being accommodating to outside of the office commitments.
The good things- Incredible company culture and employees who transfer their skills and knowledge. - Team structures provide room for career progression and promotion. - Good balance between work and outside interests (accommodating to out of office responsibilities).
The challengesHigh workloads, as the insurance building is fast-paced and challenging. However this makes the job very fulfilling and a great place to learn.

HR TeamWe are so glad to hear that you have experienced firsthand the atmosphere of teamwork, collaboration and respect that JLG is so fiercely protective and proud of. Our employees and their career development are crucial to us, as we strive to provide opportunities for employees to impact the direction of our organisation. Did you know, many directors of JLG companies have started in entry level roles and are now running successful businesses? Although dealing with vulnerable clients can be challenging, we are pleased you have felt support and unity whilst working with us! We look forward to continuing to work together!

    Great team environment
The good thingsSince starting at Johns Lyng, I’ve really enjoyed the great team environment. Management have been extremely understanding of family commitments and encourage all to have a good work life balance. It really does feel more like a family than just work colleagues. There has been plenty of opportunity to further my career and it has been a great industry to break into.
The challengesEvery day is a challenge in the fast paced insurance game. The work load can be tough at times however the hard work is always recognised and rewarded.
HR TeamWe appreciate your outstanding feedback! We certainly do recognise the need for a work-life balance and, especially during these unprecedented times, we certainly want to ensure that our team is feeling supported. We pride ourselves on recognising and rewarding hardworking, dedicated employees and will always strive to ensure you are reaching your full potential. Keep up the fantastic work!

The challengesHigh Workload and sometimes difficult clients
HR TeamWow - thank you for the feedback! We appreciate your hard work and dedication to your role and your teammates. It’s pleasing to see that you recognise the career opportunities available which you would have seen supported by the recent email "Learning & Development @ JLG" which highlighted that each and every employee has the opportunity to learn and grow their skills every day. Clients can be a challenge wherever you go but regardless of whether or not they are just difficult, or difficult because they are vulnerable and experiencing hardship, our excellent customer service approach and positive attitude will not only assist them but continue to develop your own personal skills. Keep up the great work!

HR TeamWe are pleased to hear that you are feeling supportive within your team and want to highlight how much we value career opportunities. We don't want to limit our employees to available positions within their own team, or even state and have recently put together an in-house recruitment team where all internal positions will be advertised nationwide. We support learning and development through the 70/20/10 principle and encourage our employees to research and put forward any educational courses/training courses to their manager and/or HR. Remember that individual initiative goes a long way and will be rewarded!

HR TeamThank you for your review and we think that Johns Lyng is more than just a stepping stone (but we’re biased!). I am pleased to share with you some interesting facts about our unique business. Did you know that we have been operating for over 65 years as one of Australia’s main building insurance providers? We service some pretty impressive clients and have reach all over Australia. Not only that, we are an ASX listed company and have attracted some amazing talent - 2/3rds of our managers have been promoted internally and ¼ of our total employees have been provided with career progression within the business – not too shabby! Our peak season is certainly a challenge, however, how we unite and overcome the workload is a true testament to our dedicated employees and we couldn’t be more proud of how we carry ourselves during those times.

Work hard and you will be recognised
The good thingsHard workers are recognised and rewarded with career progression. Holds people accountable.
The challengesChallenging landscape and you have to learn to manage competing priorities
HR TeamThanks for leaving feedback in your capacity as a current employee as too often we receive feedback we can’t control once an employee has left. We’re so pleased that you can share such a positive work experience story and can see that staff who deliver (and as you say are held accountable) are rewarded with career opportunities. As a HR team we work really hard on developing our staff so that they can deliver their best and collaborate with others across all businesses. As you have flagged we acknowledge that the very nature of what we deliver for clients is in a challenging landscape, often dealing with vulnerable clients who have either lost or had damage to their biggest asset in life – their home. On the flip side this is also so rewarding when we are able to see the end results. Thanks again for your feedback and we would love you to keep sharing your feedback and ideas through any of the forums we have available – external reviews, engagement survey, internal forums etc – or of course reaching out to the HR team personally. We love staff input and our doors are always open.

HR TeamThanks for taking the time to share your feedback and we’re disappointed to hear that you have felt this way. It is a good opportunity to remind all employees that there are both internal and external avenues for you to explore for assistance and support if you are facing challenges – whether they be either work or personal. We also have so many examples of internal career progression stories so it is a shame that you felt these opportunities were not available. We pride ourselves on our unique partnership business structure and we are constantly ensuring we have succession plans in place for key critical positions within the business. In fact over 2/3rd of our existing management team are all as a result of internal transfers and career growth. For any existing or future employees please ask questions if these opportunities are of interest to you.

HR Team5 stars! We love it when employees are able to share their amazing experience with others. You’ve also identified how career-minded our employees are and we believe that’s something that really helps set us and our culture apart – career-minded individuals working as a team with enormous amounts of drive and energy to get the job done. Thank you for your commitment to both JLG and your role while you were here and, with the JLG mindset you’ve been privileged to be part of, we know that you will continue to have a rewarding career journey.

    Regional Manager

1 to 2 years in the role, former employee
Career progression in new office was great, intense, isolated and along with the leanings of a construction business financial measurement and reporting there were more positive then negative, but staff retention is very challenging
The good thingsThe lessons learnt about working in the insurance industry. The opportunity to work assessing and determining causation in challenging situations
The challengesThe management and financial measures are very short term (month to month) and narrow minded. The Senior Management style is somewhat passive aggressive and at times contradictory to values
    2 people found this helpful
HR TeamThanks so much for sharing your feedback. Our Darwin office is manned with a regional team and as you will appreciate being able to remove the isolation factor is a challenge faced not just by our own business, but also by others. We do our best and the fact that you were able to identify such important positives demonstrates our ability to ensure an overall national and consistent culture and delivery promise within our business. You are correct in that our financial measures are measured month by month however to clarify that there is definitely another layer that sits above that being the annual and longer-term financial strategy. Depending on the context of what you saw the fact that financials are monitored regularly allows our business to react quickly to any obstacles and to help alleviate any flow-on effects on staff. In a smaller office staff retention is felt much more and by the very nature of the location, we acknowledge that some staff have moved on for purely personal reasons.

    A good stepping stone
The good thingsGood boss, good work life balance
The challengesCompany structure too restrictive, no space to grow genuinely
HR TeamThanks for taking the time to provide your feedback and although the star ratings are not where we would like to see them, the fact that we’ve been able to provide you with a solid foundation on which to continue your career journey is a really valuable insight. The growth challenge you have identified surprised us - we’ve mentioned in previous recent reviews that over 2/3rds of our staff in management roles are through internal growth. In addition, our business partner structure is a unique opportunity and we also focus heavily on succession plans within the business. In fact, our most recent engagement survey result showed that 75% of staff believe there are good career opportunities for them at Johns Lyng, 75% feel they are progressing professionally and 80% of staff believe they will still be working here in 2 years time. We are pretty chuffed about those results but importantly take your feedback on board. There’s room for improvement here and we won’t be happy until we reach 100%!!

We can’t change your perception given you’ve moved on but it is important to flag that we believe your experience is not the norm. We don’t have enough information to be able to identify key learnings however we can confirm that we have recently worked hard on ensuring our Customer Service Team can operate at an optimum level and that employees are valued and want to come to work each day. We’ll be running another internal engagement survey in the next few months and this will be able to help us get the data to validate that recent improvements are having an impact. The challengesmanagement not taking ownership of their poor management skills in distributing work loads

HR TeamBased on the timing of your review and the fact you were a supervisor likely means your experience with us would have been impacted by the natural catastrophes we had to respond to in Victoria over the summer – namely fires and hail storms with damaging winds. Yes, this was a pretty hectic time and workloads definitely increased. Where possible we tried to manage this by bringing on additional staff, both new and also by temporarily relocating staff from other offices during this time, but were challenged by the unprecedented weather catastrophes across all of South Eastern Australia. Given previous history, we predicted that summer was likely to throw us work challenges but it’s fair to say no one expected the volume and level of natural destruction we saw. We would suggest that the allocation of work was not because of poor management skills, rather from circumstances beyond our control. Your higher rating for perks and benefits hopefully means that you were able to take advantage of some of the initiatives we ran during this time such as lunches and massages to help ease the impact on staff working above and beyond. Thanks for taking the time to share.

HR TeamWe always appreciate feedback and, given that you are writing this as a previous employee, we are pleased to confirm that significant management changes have taken place in the last few months which should address the concern you highlighted. Our people are our most important asset and our new management have some great staff initiatives in progress. All our managers need to be strong role models for our teams and, in addition to some staff changes, additional training opportunities are being planned. We recognise that all because someone holds the title ‘manager’ they may not initially have the people skills we expect so we’re working on making sure our expectations are clear and managers are supported to do their role. Thanks for your comments and we’re really excited with the awesome current management team we have.
