    Head of Training and Checking
    Feb 2026
Perth Airport WA 61053 to 4 years in the role, former employee
A great company to work for, an opportunity I'm so thankful I didn't pass up.
The good thingsI first started at Maroomba in June of 2022 as a First Officer and right from day one I was afforded opportunities that I never thought possible. Within a few months I completed a command upgrade followed by Training and Check Captain upgrades over the following 18 months. In the last 18 months I have worked as the Head of Training and Checking. The support I have received in each of these roles from all levels of management and crew has been nothing short of amazing, something that I greatly appreciate. Maroomba has never shied away from investing in their employees, providing ample opportunities for professional development. The business has undergone a growth phase over the last couple of years with big plans on the horizon and the tight knit group of solution driven individuals are well placed to capitalise on these. At the end of the day the people are what makes an organisation and, thanks to everyone at the company, I am very proud to have called myself a Maroomba employee.
The challengesMaroomba has undergone a lot of change over the last 4 years since I have been with company, and for the better. There is still work to be done to improve systems and streamline processes for efficiency, however, with the current management team in place, these things will only continue to get even better.

Maroomba Airlines provides a supportive, professional environment with a great team.
The good thingsI have genuinely enjoyed working with Maroomba Airlines. the culture is supportive, respectful, and people-focused. From day one, I felt welcomed and valued as part of the team. The environment encourages open communication, learning, and mutual support. Senior pilots, instructors, and team members are always willing to share knowledge, provide feedback, and help each other improve. This culture has played a big role in my development, pushing me to continuously refine my skills, decision-making, and professionalism as a pilot. Working at Maroomba has strengthened my confidence, discipline, and commitment to becoming a better and safer aviator.
The challengesOne of the main challenges I faced was transitioning from single-pilot operations to multi-crew cooperation and operating turbine complex aircraft. Initially, the change felt challenging. However, the training department has invested heavily in a structured and well-designed training program that makes the transition manageable, regardless of prior experience. The instructors take time to understand each pilot’s background and tailor their guidance accordingly. While the transition can seem difficult at the beginning, trusting the training process and the support system in place makes it a smooth and rewarding progression.

A rewarding role in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
The good thingsEngaging, fast paced and meaningful work with strong opportunities to learn and take on responsibility. The team culture is supportive and collaborative, and there is a genuine focus on development and trust in people to do their roles well. It’s a great environment to build skills, confidence, and industry knowledge.
The challengesAs the organisation continues to grow, there is an opportunity to further strengthen and formalise processes to support consistency and efficiency. Continued focus on refining systems and workflows would help set the team up for long-term success.

Solid, fast-paced and well-supported teams that drive personal growth and solutions
The good thingsHave thoroughly enjoyed the work and being able to progress in my role whilst remaining in the one company.
The challengesThere are very minimal improvements I would recommend. Updated and more mature systems would assist in more efficiency.

    Rewarding. Exciting. Accommodating. Lively.
The good thingsThis job will be whatever you make of it - I had a blast while I was there (only leaving for family reasons). The Dash 8 is hands down, the most fun aircraft I've flown thus far in my career. Leadership has employed a great bunch of people in ALL areas. You get to meet most of the team pretty much each day, and you're not just treated as a number. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity Maroomba offered me during my employment. Your support during difficult times was not forgotten. I am truly sad to leave!
The challengesA clear pathway for progression (steps and timeline)

A dynamic and rewarding flying environment where initiative is valued, growth is supported.
The good thingsFrom day one, you’re more than just a number—management takes the time to know your name, your goals, and where you want to grow. The company invests seriously in training and professional development, with strong pathways to become a training captain, checker, or take on management roles.
The challengesFast-changing ops, occasional schedule stress, and system gaps can test your adaptability. But these challenges also create strong learning opportunities.

I have nothing but good things to say about Maroomba; an exceptional organisation that I cannot recommend highly enough!
The good thingsExceptional culture: Mike Evans and the team have done a wonderful job creating a unique family culture and environment where it was a close-knit team. As a result of the positive environment, I was highly motivated and inspired to go above and beyond to provide their clients with the highest level of customer service. For example, after being called off a standby shift, I would aim to get to the office ASAP (i.e. within 30 minutes rather than the max of 2 hours as per the award). Work-life balance: A typical week was 2-3 days a week, mainly weekday work. Clearly, this is unique and shows the value the organisation places on taking care of its employees. Fleet and safety: Maroomba fostered a safety-first environment where everything was genuinely undertaken to the highest standard. I am genuinely impressed! Mike and the chief pilot had an open-door policy where I could approach them with any questions, concerns, etc.
The challengesAs a lower-hour individual (<1500 hours), the exceptional work-life balance was not suited to this early stage of my career. I was seeking flight hours, and unfortunately, Maroomba offered a full-time role with about 300 flight hours a year. Like I said, it's exceptional! But for the right candidate. The company's lifestyle offering should not be scrutinised, but rather consider whether the role is right for you regarding hour building.
