    Senior Project Manager-Research
    Mar 2026
Melbourne VIC 3000Less than 1 year in the role, former employee
While hinged on the interactions with a single person, one of my worst professional experiences.
The good thingsNotice that this review is targeted for ClimateWorks Centre: Very engaged, mostly fairly young staff. Perhaps good for starting a career in climate action/policy. Be aware of a high staff roll-over.
The challengesJob was not as advertised. Despite being a senior role (HEW8), I was siloed by my manager and served as personal assistent (more aligned with HEW5). Higher management unwilling or incapable to adress those and other serious work place issues.

    Very political not contractor friendly
The good thingsThe project itself is meaningful and exciting.
The challengesThere were a few structural issues that made the experience difficult at times. Team autonomy was limited, and goals were often unclear or misaligned between squads and leadership. Communication from the top down felt fragmented, which made it harder to move quickly or make confident decisions. Leadership also seemed to have limited experience working with senior designers, so design input wasn’t always fully understood. In addition, some hiring and role-scoping decisions meant that not every team was set up with the right mix of skills.

Its culture is more task driven than people driven
The good thingsMost colleagues are friendly, 17% super
The challengesPoor work life balance, insufficient collaboration among teams with too much politics, not enough investment on staff's development

Working on a 1-year project I got a real sense of achievement. Any longer and you are hiding from the real world.
The good thingsI was a contractor at Monash and certainly enjoyed remuneration well above my permie peers, but still below market rates. As an "outsider" I was highly respected.
The challengesPerm remuneration is low, so a lot of the employees are just filling seats. You need to find the handful of individuals who will get things done

A good place to begin your career, gaining knowledge and experience before you head out to the corporate world to apply that knowledge.
The good thingsChallenging work which has real impact.
The challengesThe physical workplace- unreliable lifts, heating, cooling, toilets etc. Limited opportunities for growth.

Ushering in live theatre venues brings me joy and a sense of accomplishment.
The good thingsMonash is an inclusive company with training courses covering many aspects of theatre procedures and personal development. The interaction between all staff makes for a great working environment with a mix of young and older persons.
The challengesWith the training provided there are not many challenges - perhaps the only issues can be a language barrier with patrons that do not have English as their first language

    To forget.
The good thingsJob was assured during the worst of the pandemic.
The challengesAcademic departments are designed by/to faculty members. Research fellows and fixed-term staff are not given opportunities for growth. Very poor collaboration and collegiality among co-workers.

Excellent colleagues and flexible working in public health. However, I had completely different experiences in clinical dept. at Monash.
The good thingsThere are a lot of opportunities to work at Monash. Either in teaching or research.
The challengesInitially difficult to understand as there is not enough opportunity for ECF to explore, but you can understand better as time progresses.

The good thingsWorking and learning from a vast diversity of people!
The challengesDidn't really find anything challenging as I worked with great teams of people, therefore it made it easier to quickly learn new processes, workflows and procedures in any position I was put in!

Monash has great facilities but poor culture
The good thingsTeams within the University are very good and the Clayton campus has a lot of facilities.
The challengesCareer progression is only open to people entering at higher levels in the academic scale. No performance reviews are conducted with postdocs so you can be hitting targets and not be promoted. HR contracts also disappear once signed make sure you get a screenshot.

Not as challenging as I thought
The good thingsHaving the opportunity to see the latest research by some leading academics as well as contributing to shape the education programs for our future generation. The work-life balance is great comparing to my former role in consulting. People are generally nice and helpful. A lot of freedom to innovate.
The challengesThere seems to be limited leadership to drive greater resource utilisation and modern workforce/culture. It seems to be that many functions are duplicated across various portfolios due to the limited capacity/capability from the central teams. There seems to be limited career progression opportunity within the organisation.
