SJ Mill Maintenance Good work place to work in Friendly, safe No real pressure to perform, although some more input/overseeing from Supervisor would be appreciated for more productive outcome Good salary for this area, although to make a that good salary you need to be prepared to do the OT during slack season so 6 days a week etc All in all good work place

like working in a 19th century factory, its cheaper to hire someone else/ pay workers comp than it is to make the job safe
The good thingsInteresting work, good coworkers, big machines
The challengesterrible roster when working shift. expect one weekend a month you absolutely need to join your union. don't attend a meeting without management without a union rep. this work is "at will". the probationary period in the EBA exceeds the length of a season. you can be dismissed without cause and without warning. make sure you are familiar with the EBA before you sign your contract, they might not give it to you without asking even though they are required to do so. follow your jsa safely to the letter. if you don't you might not be eligible for workers comp. the safety culture at this place is mostly management trying to avoid liability, not preventing accidents. read about the enforceable undertaking that occured and you will understand all you need to know about the safety culture. accountability and speaking up is the only way things will get better.

If you need a job, these guys will do; don't expect anything more.
The good thingsDuring the non-crush period, the work-life balance is pretty good.
The challengesArchaic management philosophies. Very poor work-life balance during the crushing season. Disparate systems. No long-term vision. People are treated like consumables.

A strong business but needs a lot of work.
The good thingsCorporate backing, good work hours and salary. Most people on the ground are great and put a lot of effort into their work.
The challengesManagement give little to no direction down the chain. Communication both in departments and between is terrible, HR do little to rectify this or other problems.

I have spent quite a few years as an employee at MSF Sugar and have advanced my skills well due to the variety of work available, it is a business that is in need of more skilled and educated people at every level to improve the outlook and moral within t
The good thingsBetter than average wages and conditions due largely to high Union membership and good communication through the enterprise bargaining process. An adequate Safety regimen. Many dedicated and hard working individuals in the workplace who respect those who also do their duty in the workplace.
The challengesThe desire to become a best practice producer seems to have deafened many in management to the voices of those who have kept it afloat, the 20 to 30% of workers who do the 70 to 80% of the work. Management both middle and upper have historically been chosen by default though the HR process does appear to be changing in that regard. Little chance for overtime or bonuses.
