Toxic culture, weak leadership and unsustainable workload.
The good thingsLimited. A small number of good colleagues and the free Christmas ham.
The challengesMy experience was overwhelmingly negative and aligned with the cultural issues identified in the organisation's 2024 independent review. There appeared to be significant gaps in leadership accountability, contributing to an environment where internal politics, inconsistent decision-making, and low psychological safety were common. Trust in the organisation was difficult to maintain, particularly given concerns around confidentiality, transparency, and how people-related matters were handled. Workloads were frequently excessive and not managed sustainably, resulting in prolonged pressure and burnout. Over time, this environment had a meaningful impact on my wellbeing and confidence. While the organisation has publicly acknowledged cultural issues, it is not clear that meaningful or consistent change has been embedded across all areas, particularly at a leadership level.

A career in video editing informed much of my balanced and holistic approach to life.
The good thingsSatisfaction in creating and communicating national stories that were visually exciting and engaging. Working with teams and also injecting a positive personality into my projects.
The challengesAs news is ever-evolving, the sourcing of material and managing timeframes is always a challenge. This is always met with problem solving skills and focussed communication.

This company needs a lot of work. I wouldn't recommend working here, quick burn out, no support! You are just a number on the roster.
The good thingsThe work was interesting and fast paced, exciting to be part of
The challengesThe culture is awful, people have been there for far too long and don't care about the new ones.

    Toxic workplace - avoid!
The good thingsGreat colleagues, nice offices
The challengesToo many managers! Real issues in the workplace ignored when raised over and over, causing an extremely toxic environment. High turnover of staff due to no real improvement in workload or solutions to improve process.

Very basic and deluded company to work for, I wouldn't waste time here if you want to build a meaningful career in the industry.
The good thingsThey do put on good employee events such as end of year christmas parties and meet and greets. That's really the only interesting/enjoyable perk of working for the company.
The challengesLow pay. They pay award wage (for as least everyone in the department I was in). They don't see the value in their employees, you're basically seen as a number to do the job you do. For a company that brags about its multi million dollar profits, they act like there employees are not worth anything extra. There is ZERO career progression opportunities. I tried hard for multiple years to work my way up and there was no support from management in this.

Lack of strong leadership, growth opportunities, cultural issues,
The good thingsBig Aussie media name. Slow/Moderately paced environment. Great commitment to invest in new technologies. ex mac, mac mini, modern tools like CI Pipelines.
The challengesTop challenges observed at Nine (in order): 1. Many many many cultural problems as surveyed and reported by an external australian company. Report is available to be viewed publicly. Please do your due diligence if you are ever planning on working here. 2. Lack of strong leadership is evidently seen esp. at the bottom levels of management. Almost all technical decisions are spearheaded under the pretense of "best practice". For most new problems, instead of simply letting young and bright minds solve it with a modern solution it is often the case where they are "led" when it in reality, spectacularly & arrogantly micro-managed. 3. There is non existent growth opportunities for a junior to mid-career engineers cohort. However it might be a more suitable place for a Senior Engineer looking to rack up some exp points. Senior Engineers are valued by their Individual Contributions instead of the impact they have on their team using SME (Subject Matter Expertise) 4. Work tends to be extremely dull often as there aren't many things to learn or to build, teams operate in a bit of silos which further widens the divide. for ex, frontend team (a,b,c,d,e), backend team, services team, identity team, vms team (team names not exact, but you get the point) and the only time you get to work together is if something is broken.

    A nightmare every single day.
The good thingsNone. There are no good things about working for this company.
The challengesHaving a manager that constantly intimidates and belittles you in front of other staff, and my line manager and the so-called "People & Culture" department do NOTHING to stop it. I was forced to resign instead. Best thing I ever did. Pay was terrible while they would spend thousands on frivolous "sales junkets", and giving bonuses to people who were completely useless at their job. Constant promises of a new facility & equipment which never happened. Absolutely no care or consideration for their employees or content that they supposedly create. This place is the WORST employer I have ever worked with in my 45 year career.

    Poor management.
The good thingsMet some great friends.
The challengesNews Editing in Sydney has a genuinely bad manager, minimal flexibility, unempathetic to workers, and generally poor people skills. There has been a large turnover in staff - red flag! Nine provides minimal perks overall and generally lower pay than the other networks.

Pretty good place to work and learn more about the media industry.
The good thingsA lot of freedom to experiment with different solutions. Good culture in the Team, everyone is super helpful and respectful. Ability to learn a lot if you want. Work life balance is reasonably good, you work hard but it's easy to set boundaries.
The challengesDifferent departments can be quite siloed and this is not always great for collaboration and efficiency. Pay is getting better but not the highest paying in the market.

Nine does not understand the modern company culture, stuck in tradition
The good thingsPrestige, central office location, networking opportunities
The challengesShallow and money hungry management, low salary, multiple negative race-driven encounters, Nine is very behind in company culture and does not understand putting its people first. Worst experience I have had with any company. Employees constantly talking about management behind their backs. Everyone wanted to stick out the role for a year, get the role on their resume and get out ASAP.
