Would not recommend unless you want to be “under roof” everyday and burnt out constantly
The good thingsThe children and the families were amazing and a lot of agency staff were wonderful.
The challengesI would not recommend Only About Children as a workplace. In my experience, the culture was poor, with repeated issues around bias, prejudice, exclusion and unprofessional personal views being brought into the centre environment. Management lacked consistency, follow through and proper support for staff, and turnover was extremely high. There were also ongoing concerns around compliance, incident handling, cleanliness, resourcing and the expectations placed on educators. Overall, it felt like a workplace that cared more about appearances and box ticking than staff wellbeing, ethical leadership or a genuinely safe and respectful environment.

Stressed, tired and always over worked.
The good thingsChildren are the best, educators are nice too.
The challengesThis organisation is something else. The toxic behaviours from the director and higher ups managers is really bad. So much stress, no support and cutting corners wherever possible. This place is walking red flag, please stay away at all costs.

You won’t be treated fairly if you’re are casual. Head office don’t even acknowledge you.
The good thingsStaff are lovely and welcoming
The challengesNo support from head office- worst company to work for. No support, no staff, constant cuts to save money, a lot of under roofing. List could go on.

Be wary of the “5 star reviews” - clearly written by HR.
The good thingsMade some lifelong friendships with colleagues.
The challengesManagement have no care or regard for their wellbeing of their educators. I worked for this company for nearly a decade and would tell any family or educator thinking of working here to RUN. The safety of children is constantly compromised to meet KPIs. This company is disgusting.

Strive for career based growthThis company has done so much for my career, offered me so many opportunities to develop my leadership skills, from secondments to other campus' to yearly conferences to Sydney. While I do think recently it has become more focused on profits than I would like, I don't think that can take away from the amazing people I have the pleasure of working besides everyday.

I do love working at OAC, wish I could come back I really miss the children.
The good thingsThe children and parents were so welcoming and friendly, made my training meaningful. Some staff were fine.
The challengesSpeaking in their native tongue at work makes me feel a bit left out, almost feels like some staff are just gossiping but I am unsure of this. I did feel that I wasn’t being treated fairly because I was only a student then and didn’t want to be verbally attacked by a single staff member

Working at Only about children helped grow my career and gave me opportunities to grow personally.
The good thingsOnly About Children gave me opportunities to grow my career. I started doing my placement for my diploma and progressed into a leadership role in a couple of years, and the company even helped me with my uni fees.
The challengesThere will always be some challenges in every workplace, especially in our sector.

    It’s only about profits
The good thingsLocation was good for me.
The challengesOAC's motivational phrase is "We see you and you are worthy," but since joining the company, I’ve noticed that they don’t even celebrate educators' birthdays, educators say or any milestones. It feels like they use your ideas without truly appreciating the hard work you put in.

Professional pride in quality education, safety and care - wouldn't work anywhere else.
The good thingsI am so happy at OAC. The people, the approach, the transparency, the opportunities, the benefits! Are there challenges? Yes (there are at every organisation!). But the team all approach these together, with Heart, and with Children at the forefront.
The challengesThe Australian Government are taking steps to try and change some of these challenges.

    Work with an agency instead!
The good thingsThey are flexible with casual shifts
The challengesThere are lots of discrepancies with wages. Some educators with the same qualifications as me got paid higher. HR was very unresponsive for my request to review my wages. They didn’t want to recognise my diploma qualification and continued to pay me minimum wages.

Can’t say I am happy here
The good thingsMy centre manager and colleagues are passionate people in the sector. I am lucky to have an amazing centre director who supports my work by mentoring, and providing resources and PDs.
The challengesOnly four weeks annual leave. Crazy expectation on paperwork that keeps on growing every year. People who do not work in the centres make decisions, making it difficult for people working on the floor. Sometimes, we have to contradict the philosophies because we do not have enough time at all to be engaging with the children.

As to be expected with any 9+ year stint with an organisation, there have been ups and downs. However, OAC have always navigated turbulent times well, and ensured issues are resolved proactively with effective solutions. OAC have provided both me and a huge number of people I have worked with, a platform from where they can elevate their career in the early childhood sector.
The good thingsOAC are a large organisation with varied departments working to support centre operations, team, children & families. Though its sizes poses challenges, the people working within each department are overwhelmingly great people who are passionate about education and the experience of all stakeholders involved in the organisation. OAC confront the obvious challenges that face the sector and large business, and are proactive in working through practical solutions to new challenges & issues. Hard work is recognised and rewarded, while underperformance of team is generally managed in a way that will support a team member to improve and develop.
The challengesOAC's biggest challenge is driven by sector issues around workforce, staff retention and managing turnover. This has been exacerbated by impacts of COVID-19, however OAC have been proactive and forward thinking to manage this appropriately. OAC are forecasting clear support plans to ensure their model for navigating such issues is sustainable and supports team members.

Heaven for parents, hell for educators.
The good thingsIf you’re lucky enough to work under a supportive director and alongside a good team, you won’t have much issue with the working culture and environment.
The challengesToo many expectations. You’re overloaded with paperworks with so little time to complete them. The amount of paperworks were the highest I’ve seen at a childcare and the salary doesn’t match the amount of work you’ll have to bare. The company squeezes every bit of you by adding fancy title to add additional tasks to your role, with no salary adjustment. Salary increase is almost non-existent at OAC.

Empower every child to reach their full potential at Oac!
The good thingsIncredible place to work, grow, and contribute to better outcomes for children. At Oac, you will be working with a team of passionate people, who are committed to delivering quality education and care to children from 0-5 years. If purpose is important to you, you'll find this at Oac.
The challengesSpeaking as a Support Office team member - Oac is an incredibly fast-paced environment, which is exciting for some, but could be overwhelming for others. If this is something you're looking for, your efforts and contributions will be valued and recognised, and you will be working as part of a supportive team who share your commitment and drive.

    Support for career growth
The good thingsOAC are a supportive service provider who value career progression and employment opportunities. I've been with the company for 8 years and in that time have been supported to transition from an educator role to a leadership role in AD and then Director. When eventually looking for new career opportunities I was supported for a role in the casual recruitment team. The one team culture and drive to provide the best care and education for children makes OAC a thriving workplace.
The challengesThe day to day workforce pressures can be challenging, however these issues are broadened to the Early Childhood sector itself.

    Amazing Career Development Opportunities!
The good thingsOnly About Children is more than childcare, it’s a place to grow your career, and grown I have! It all began for me as a Casual Educator 7.5 years ago. From there, i progressed into a number of Campus leadership roles, including Campus Director. My career development didn't end there though - for the last 3 years i have been positioned in our NSW Support Office overseeing Oac's learning and development initiatives. In this role, i am able to give back to our organisation’s most important asset - our people - providing development opportunities to our team members to ensure everyone has the opportunity to excel in their career at Oac, just as i have.
The challengesThe workforce challenges the sector is currently experiencing, which is an unavoidable struggle for every provider and Educator.

The good thingsThe team, the environment, the all round passion for the industry.
The challengesThe recruitment market in this present time in the childcare industry. Although Only About Children Team never let this challenge slow them down.

The good thingsFor those who are driven by career development opportunities, Oac can support you really well in this space. There is a clear focus on quality care for the children and achieving best practices.

The good thingsTeam recognition is amazing! There are always new campaigns or initiatives to give back to the amazing Educators and team members. Management is really supportive, there is always someone to turn to. Salaries are reviewed regularly and increase requests from centre managers are fairly approved.
The challengesOur industries current workforce issues is evident across all companies. I wish i could scream louder to bring more passionate Educators on board. I have worked for the best of the best and the worst of the worst and Oac is the best by far.
