Make sure they pay you what you're worth.
The good thingsThe clients and fellow colleagues
The challengesA mix of good and bad here.. some good managers and other poor ones. Very unfair pay rates - some people overpaid and others underpaid. Make sure they don't railrad you into lower pay if you have the skills and experience. Make them pay you to industry standards as they often pay people with degrees and exoerience at SCHADS level 3.. People in the corporate side of the organisation are treated better than front line workers. Overall an OK place to work as most of my poor experiences related to one particular manager who was out of their depth. Otherwise the organisation seems to operate quite well.

At the end of the day, I go home and know that I have made a real difference in people's lives. I get to work with amazing people, and I love my job.
The good thingsThe people. Frontline workers, managers, and leadership that have great personal values, and are authentic people. Doesn't matter where you sit in the team, your opinion matters because you are respected as team member.
The challengesEvery organisation has challenges, and Open Minds is no different. If I didn't like challenges, I wouldn't work in this sector.

    Hard working and enjoyable.
The good thingsManagement will support you however they can, it can get busy, but they always try to reach out and check. The work is worth it, can be challenging but is very much awarding. Management will try to work around availability
The challengesAlthough the work life balance is difficult. Most times this is because shifts needing to be filled.

    A disappointing experience
The good things1. Initial training is reasonably good and you are paid to complete it. 2. Rostering app is stable.
The challenges1. Many clients are very disrespectful and engage in unwelcome behaviour (yelling, swearing, inappropriate touching / hitting, suggestive comments, defecating on floor and in one case refusal to wear clothing on every shift). Managers need to work harder with clients to inform them of acceptable boundaries for these behaviours to ensure safer working environments for supports. 2. Having to work in hazardous environments without adequate PPE. 3. Too often care plans seem to miss important client information, or only focus on one aspect of a clients disabilities. (For example, not informing the support of epilepsy or providing a risk management plan for response, or focusing on vision impairment but not mobility challenges, in one case the care plan did not even mention a clients autism). 4. Some supports in care plans make no sense such as providing personal hygiene support to simply wash a clients back when there is no physical impairment or being made to search the community for a client because they are not home when you arrive for your shift. 5. Managers often don't return calls or messages. For example, I spent three weeks trying to get a reply from a manager about a performance review before just giving up. 6. Wages were not paid reliably and manager did not prioritise its resolution. 7. Inability to build a reliable schedule / hours make it hard to pay the bills. 8. Too many IT systems to navigate, these need to be consolidated. 9. Automatically generated notices arrive at midnight so if you don't have your phone on silent you will be woken.

Treat it as a seasonal job then move on when something better comes up
The good thingsExtra shifts as other support staff don't always turn up to work
The challengesClients are not respectful, rarely see work colleagues as you work on your own, managers without merit, authoritarian leadership style. Inflexible work roster.

A workplace that I could not fault - headspace
The good thingsIncredible team culture, excellent support from seniors and colleagues, great access to training and resources, inclusivity, overall 'vibe' and feeling valued & appreciated. Also exceptional encouragement around work life balance + a willingness and eagerness to receive feedback and improve.
The challengesAny challenge is always promptly attended to and overcome with compassion, respect and team work. I cannot thing of anything to complain about.

    Would not recommend.
The good thingsSome consistency in shifts means you can build rapport with clients. A lot of independence. Some shifts are great fun.
The challengesVERY poor communication. Emails & phone calls to care leaders unanswered. Changing shifts without consulting clients leading to poor experiences between support worker & client. Little to no training & expected to be available 24/7 yet rostered less than contractual hours.

I saw the reviews of this company and shouldn't have ignored them.
The good thingsMost coworkers are friendly and understanding.
The challengesNo support (sometimes can't even get through to the urgent on-call line), high staff turnover, low regard for safety and hygiene - dangerous situations and poor planning, no choice in which clients you support, poor communication (often no response when you ask questions either) and no follow-through on anything, poor management who do not appreciate work/life balance, wear and tear on your vehicle due to high community access.

Awful, I will never go back
The good thingsThe NDIS participants you work with and the support staff.
The challengesExecutive leadership are detached from reality. Middle management are treated poorly. Middle upper management are mixed, but one is pretty terrible. Due to this the retention rates are below 30%, which results in everyone else chasing their tales as systems and procedures leave with the talent that resigned.

Zero support when I started asking questions and asking for support beyond being paid.
The good thingsThe pay rate was high and many opportunities to work

I started this job wanting to make a difference but feel as though it has been the most soul draining and grueling job I have undertaken. I appreciate the skills I have obtained (through experience, not through the help of my employer) but I will not work
The good thingsGaining skills that boost my employability
The challenges- low salary where I am paid like a part-time employee but am expected to work as a casual - poor management who do not provide the care to their staff - extremely difficult working conditions with little compensation or counsell - unaccessable support networks - training is provided sporatically rather than when workers need it - high cost of travel - not paid for long transit to work destination - unrealistic standards placed on workers, i.e. calls at 9pm for changes to 8am shifts - poor managment of technical programs - no emotional support - Unfair of client NDIS funding, i.e. billing clients for rostering mistakes I could go on
