Supportive environment where people take pride in their work
The good thingsAn incredibly supportive team where the vast majority of people genuinely seem to care about the quality of work they produce and helping each other grow their skills. Good work life balance, a nice office in the city, and plenty of opportunity to work from home. Directors and managers seem to genuinely care about people and advocate on their behalf. Some excellent tools for the newly established Data Analytics Platform and team members are striving to maintain scalable best-practices. Focussed work that seems to be well-planned and having positive impacts across the university for staff and students.
The challengesQuite a flat structure, so not a lot of opportunity to progress. Disappointing treatment of staff from exec level during EBA negotiations

Toxic Technology Business Team & Culture
The good thingsWork Life Balance. Convenient location. Accessible buildings.
The challengesToxic tech business unit where leaders shield underperforming program directors, avoid accountability, and hide delays with misleading go-live details. External contractors are blamed for raising valid concerns, while end users are ignored in favor of saving face. Dirty Politics

My overall experience at RMIT University is professionally enriching, marked by strong collaboration, innovation, and academic growth, despite occasional administrative and logistical challenges.
The good thingsWhat I liked most at RMIT University was the collaborative research culture and strong focus on real-world impact. Working with experienced academics and using advanced facilities helped me grow professionally and contribute meaningfully to innovative projects.
The challengesThis university does not have any public and quick transportation system.

Ambitious professional staff - don't bother
The good thingsCentral location, people can be friendly if you're in the right team.
The challengesAcademics and students are treated like gold whereas professional staff members get zero chance of promotion or training. People with less experience were promoted because they had a bubbly personality or were a favourite, merit means nothing. Top heavy execs that are clueless. Lowest paid uni.

An outstanding workplace that fosters growth, values talent, and continuously strives for excellence.
The good thingsRMIT offers a very supportive work environment with ample opportunities for learning and career progression. Real talent is appreciated, and the leadership team exceptional—full of inspiring role models. They invests heavily in developing the leaders, ensuring they bring out the best in their teams.
The challengesLike any large organisation, refining processes can be a challenge, but RMIT actively works on continuous improvement. Employees at all levels can see and feel the institution's commitment to making things better every day.

Generally I have loved it. I have a great boss and great team. But there is no career to be had, so time to go.
The good thingsGood overall benefits (Salaries above average, super, generally generous leave provisions). Generally good hybrid work allowances, depending on role.
The challengesZero career pathways. Internal candidates are often treated poorly by the talent acquisition team. High performance does not translate to promotion, or opportunities for secondments. P&C seem to dance around this issue and there has been no action on this for years. Sadly it is the good people who come in for a couple of years then leave when they realize they cant forge a career at RMIT. Even worse, it is the sub-par ones who do. The central services and portfolios live in their own bubbles and have no idea what the majority of the workforce are really thinking or feeling.

WFH was nice with one day a week. Met some nice contacts however overall the ability for the teals to work cohesively or toward a common goal was non existent. Toxic environment
The good thingsSome nice people working there. A stable base of processes and tools from which to build.
The challengesExtreme lack of understanding the concept of working together. With higher level of management a poor understanding of what they are managing.

not a place for seasoned professionals. if you are a starter and want to foot in the door then is the place for you.
The good thingsNothing to call out.
The challengesExtremely poor IT management. People sitting at leadership position just pass the buck and no real decision making. Meetings with no outcomes. Governance meetings are a farce.

    Clueless
The good thingsThe University as a whole is a great place with very nice people.
The challengesThe IT leadership team is absolutely clueless and have no idea what they want to do. If you love a lot of processes and documentation that serves no purpose, then this is the place for you.

Typical industrial-type organisation. No ethical value.
The good thingsAwful organisational culture, 17% super is a trap. If you are a genuinely good person and don't try to change things, don't waste your time working there.
The challengesTry to destroy your confidence—constant feedback system, one-sided decision.

Sadly universities have become corporatised. They’re businesses no longer places of genuine learning and exploration.
The good thingsMost of my colleagues and the students I taught.u
The challengesWorkloads for academic staff were ridiculously unrealistic. You have to work every waking hour to keep up. Due to the very high teaching loads, there was very little left for research activities. Work/life balance...what is that?

The good thingsThe people you work with a hard working and competent in a very difficult environment. City central location.

Disappointed, promises to expand trades training & not a priority for RMIT
The good thingsLocation & great places to dine around Carlton
The challengesFocus is on KPIs, Compliance & sadly educational outcomes are 3rd in the priorities. Once was the best trade training facilities, but not anymore, more interested in international students & higher education focus, sadly trades training is not a priority anymore
