Good intentions, poor execution, and no real support for managers
    The good thingsSalary sacrifice packaging.
The challengesUnfortunately, the way change is being managed is overwhelming and poorly structured. Everything is being implemented at once — new systems, reporting expectations, compliance frameworks — without giving managers time to adapt. The pressure from head office departments to meet their own KPIs creates an unsustainable environment. Frontline managers are exhausted, overworked, and under-supported. It often feels that the only part of the company that truly matters is head office, while those running villages are left to absorb unrealistic demands.

The challengesUpper management do not care about the residents. They would rather waste company money on perks and junkets for managers. The residents pay a lot of money to live in their facilities, and senior management just don't care about what the residents want.

From day one, I’ve felt genuinely supported by an incredible leadership team that fosters connection, collaboration, and growth. You’re never alone here—there’s always someone ready to guide, encourage, or simply listen. Career development is a cornerstone of RSLLC’s culture. Whether you're just starting out or looking to advance, RSLLC provides the tools, mentorship, and encouragement to help you thrive. What truly sets RSLLC apart is its unwavering commitment to its values. These aren’t just words on a wall—they’re lived every day. I feel like I am finally home...and I have been welcomed like I am.
The good thingsThe support from not only senior leadership but from peers is amazing. We are truly one team. We are encouraged to work from the heart every day and it is reflected in all that we do.
The challengesResidential Aged Care is a challenge across the industry. We all face the same challenges. There isn't anything that I feel that RSL could improve.

    Detrimental management.
The good thingsColleagues attempts to be positive
The challengesUnfortunately, RSL likes to employ narcissistic management who are more interested in using company money to boost their own career portfolio by implementing projects, "improvements" or systems, that look good on their cv for when they move on, which is usually quickly in the regional and higher management team. (Check the resigning numbers. )Yet does little to nothing for the residents or ground staff's workday, at times it is even detrimental. Lack of training and support from management. Management do not care about the residents, veterans or the staff on the ground. Big red lights with not being compliant in Aged care quality assessment. Staff that are performing and doing the ground work is given more work and no acknowlegement.

Great promotion opportunities if you're a narcissist.Positive: The residents and on the floor staff are the best bit of the job. Negative: Unfortunately, RSL likes to employ narcissistic management who are more interested in using company money to boost their own career portfolio by implementing projects, "improvements" or systems, that look good on their cv for when they move on, which is usually quickly in the regional and higher management team. Yet does little to nothing for the residents or ground staff's workday, at times it is even detrimental. For example, bringing the catering inhouse, should have made the food better, but they used it to cut costs and boost management wages (hired an "Executive chef", who had worked at the cafe in a retirement village?), by delivering substandard food and removing full cooked breakfasts each day without resident consultation, whilst charging the residents the same money per day as before. Management do not care about the residents, veterans or the staff on the ground in Residential Aged Care.

I worked as a cook at RSL and I have to say, my experience was very disappointing. The organization doesn’t seem to align with the values of respect and service, especially towards the elderly. The kitchen staff received very little support and resources, making it hard to prepare and serve quality meals for the residents. Management didn’t address our concerns, which made things even more frustrating. I expected a not-for-profit to be better at showing compassion and dedication.
The good thingsGreat coworkers and amazing residents

    Community Registered Nurse
    May 2024
    Coffs Harbour NSW 2450
A good job, but not a career.
The good thingsI was working as a community nurse and really enjoyed the autonomy of the position. Enjoyment in this role seems to be very dependant on your local manager. I got on well with mine, but things would be very different if I didn't. The company as a whole is quite disorganised, so you need to self coordinate a lot of stuff. It was a bit like being self employed without the dramas of sorting out all the accounting. This wouldn't suit everyone, but I liked it. Because you are going to visit people in their houses, the hours are very flexible, and you get to meet an awful lot of people you otherwise never would.
The challengesZero scope for career advancement. I very rarely met anyone outside our immediate team, and was never able to work out where our team sat in the company, or even how big the company was. If any of your clients start to deteriorate beyond your scope to provide help, it can be very challenging to escalate things and coordinate appropriate care through GPs or hospitals. Its community aged care, so after spending a lot of time developing very close relationships with your clients, you will often watch them disappear into a facility, or die. This gets to be pretty nihilistic and wearing after a while.

Wonderful Organization operating with purpose, great history and enables staff to learn and progress
The good thingsIncredibly satisfying to be employed by RSL Lifecare. Staff and volunteers at all levels are passionate and committed about making a difference in the lives of senior Australians and Veterans. Systems and processes are fantastic with Management leading from the top and supporting from the bottom. The RSL spirit is displayed across the business resulting in great culture, care and career opportunities. Feel like a valued team member not Just a head count.
The challengesCOVID, bushfires, Royal Commission did present many challenges and also opportunities for improvement. Finding people who understand and respect the purpose of the business.
