Says something when you have the General Manager of People and Culture having to give 5 star reviews. Values????integrity??
The good thingsAutonomy working outreach with ability to apply creative interventions when working with people with complex needs. Some amazing front line staff. Ability to network in the community. Good for experience.
The challengesDe-professionalism by leaders with little to no knowledge of the sector. No application of trauma informed practices anywhere. Unsupportive supervision with constant measuring of output via box ticking. No career progression, or skills development. Poor onboarding of new staff leading to high expectations to perform challenging work without support. Dis-connection within team, leading to low morale and dissatisfaction. Burn out a given.

Making a difference with great people by your side
The good thingsThe most amazing culture. Ruah is committed to doing the hard things that will effect the biggest social impact. It's an organisation that has heart, cares about its clients and its staff, and the leadership is the best I've seen.
The challengesSocial impact work is in and of itself challenging. I am continually impressed by Ruah people who put their hearts and souls into making a difference for Perth's most vulnerable

Could be worse but could be a lot better.
The good thingsFresh and progressive attitudes among many staff, clients are a joy to work with, autonomy in the role.
The challengesUnsupportive with one manager to 20-30 staff in a team, managers pick and choose favourite for promotion rather than providing equal opportunities, some staff take advantage of the lack of oversight and cruise or can display negative behaviours to clients.

I very much enjoyed my time with Ruah however my confidence in the company was eroded through poor job security, tokenistic gestures from some senior management, paltry efforts at education and extreme levels of admin. Its a fine place to work for a while however once you have some experience its best to leave as there are few places to progress in the company without deskilling.
The good thingsMany, many good people working there. Working to be more inclusive. Purchase leave policy. Working from home. Solid approach to COVID-19 and infection control. Some good ideas. Client work was interesting. Good for gaining experience in the sector. Great access to reliable Vehicles. Good IT systems. Good facilities and buildings.
The challengesPoor job security. Restructures every couple of years. Very poor opportunities for career progression and up skilling. Very poor education opportunities/ non existent. Glass ceiling. Supervision is tokenistic and task based. Extremely high levels of admin and tracking of staff both on calendars databases and GPS. Recreating slow and bloated government inspired systems. Disconnect between upper management and staff with low understanding of psychosocial, trauma informed care and mental health recovery. Shedding of many experienced staff with no effort made to retain people. Poor understanding of compassion fatigue/ burnout. insufficient staff support.

A soul destroying, confidence breaking waste of time.
The good thingsThe client work is great. Plenty of opportunity to learn and grow supporting people in the community.
The challengesOrganisation is two faced, deceptive and is happy to throw good workers to the curb. Middle management pontificate over your work offering little support. Workers are treated like drones. Diversity does not exist with little to no diverse staff.

It's upper management vs ground staff, and management always win.
The good thingsAbove average wages and opportunity for training
The challengesThe organisation does well to present as inclusive and supportive of diversity, yet when working on the ground level this seems to be missing. Management is top heavy though constantly changing, yet floor teams are left understaffed and under supported during crucial periods of change.

Great place to have worked. Ruah has good leadership and is making a difference.
The good thingsGood employer Worked at Ruah for many years. Felt respected and valued. HR team approachable and supportive. CEO Debra wears her heart on her sleeve and is very approachable. She is human and a genuine born leader. Flexible working hours, consistent supervision, opportunity to be involved in or having a say about innovative programs.
The challengesBeing made redundant. Having said that you are offered so much support.

Knows how to “look” good from an appearances level but doesn’t know how to walk the talk.
The good thingsOn the ground staff generally have their hearts in the right place and genuinely want to help the people the services are provided for.
The challengesManagement and executive team are completely disconnected when it comes to understanding the sector they work in. Lack of respect for on the ground staff and stigma towards clients and peers from management.

Great if you are in upper management but are those roles even necessary?
The good thingsThe company sound good on paper, can certainly talk the talk but it certainly is not filtering to the workers on the ground in terms of support- very top heavy with little on the ground respect for staff
The challengesMiddle management detached from implementing changes to support staff to deliver the outcomes. Upper management more interested in showcasing services than engaging with on the ground staff at all.

Can be both rewarding and challenging working in mental health
The good thingsColleagues in our team (non executive staff), working with people with mental health issues to make a difference in their lives, support received as a peer worker, being able to use the lived experience of mental health issues and recovery in the job
The challengesUpper level management don't always know what it's like to work as on the ground staff, changes within the organisation and also more broadly the mental health sector, managing when clients are in crisis

Under appreciated and low pay. Feeling like you cannot be open and honest with management without being judged or fear of being judged negatively. Also the lack of transparency and honesty at times not being displayed in certain areas of the organisation.
The good thingsColleagues and clients are wonderful to work with.
The challengesOngoing changes in management/organisation, lack of transparency and management not being understanding in certain areas.

The good thingsGreat support from management and a wonderful team
The challengesThe usual challenges of working in family and domestic violence, the sector in WA is behind and funding is under resourced. Ruah do a fantastic job in spite of these challenges

The good thingsGreat colleagues. (Non management) staff who have common goals and ideals for a bright future
The challengesUpper management just a little out of touch from client contact work, shifting away to a less holistic practice. Organisational change was not mansged or planned out well leaving workers and clients floundering
