Undertraining first year of coming in with no support. Don’t waste your time if starting a new role,
The good thingsGood people and if not in purple circle you are not helped.
The challengesUnderstaff personnel always confused with pressure to plan work and management unable to resolve issues. If living far roster is not great.

    Very limited opportunities
The good thingsNot very many things to list here, the "perks" are pretty standard across the industry, and not unique to South32.
The challengesMany....... absolutely no career progression, think of South32 as a career stepping stone, get in and out as quickly as possible recommend 18 months maximum.

coworkers great, bosses are not very professional
The good thingsGood coworkers, always willing to help each other out
The challengesunderstaffed with high pressure put on the few people there. lack of organisation and people skills from supervision. always a struggle to get anything organised. Vehicles often unsafe to operate and higher ups play the blame game when issues are raised instead of looking into solutions

9 to 10 years in the role, former employee
When there is 3 staff left the same role in one year, the management team thinks the problem is the staff not being loyal. As a past employee, I am truly inspired by the management skills from the finance leadership team.
The good thingsNice view from the office.

Difficult, however gave excellent industry experience
The good thingsExcellent wages paid. Great bonus. Really good experience within industry.
The challengesManagement and employees don't see eye to eye. Culture differences between those at the Mine site, those based in the office and those in Perth headoffice poses the feeling of "us and them", causes frequent frustration. High workload and poor work/life balance (often start before 6am and work until after 5pm).

Great opportunity comes at a cost
The good thingsFantastic camaraderie outside of upper management Interesting and diverse types of work Potential for Different career paths to follow all in one operation. Select leadership genuinely cared about you and wanted you’re success
The challengesUpper management misalignment and lack of integrity Intense and perpetually stressful working environment No amount of effort was enough - always wanted more A lot of toxic, entitled people who have never worked anywhere else or just want to complain but won’t leave because the package is so good. Pockets of laziness and lack of accountability

    Jul 2020
5 to 6 years in the role, former employee
One of the Best Resource companies to work for as a mining engineer
The good thingsVery good and competent peoples to work with. Very good life and work balance. Excellent work culture. Great collaboration and effort between teams. Equal time FIFO roster which was great.
The challengesThe challenges were mainly to do with the dynamic changes in the mining areas, a lot of pit water constraints mainly forced re-work and planning work, which was also great because there was a fun part about continuously finding better solutions long the way.

The good thingsFortunate enough to be put into a team that taught me the processes of SAP and general mining terminology.
The challengesCommunication needs to improve. It was not often I found people on the same page with things which can cause a lot of frustration.

Great wages but requires excellent level of internal resilience
The good thingsHead office had awesome vision that didnt translate to the operation I was in, but did to others. The 9 day fortnight was awesome until it got taken away at our operation. Excellent wages.
The challengesSite management changed frequently. Many organisational restructures that caused unnecessary grief for little gain. Safety must be first and foremost but production often came out the winner.

    Production first, Safety second
The good thingsWork/life balance. A good underground workforce who sticks together and are inclusive. The positive things are slowly being taken away, hence me looking for a new job.
The challengesManagement push production to the point of creating safety issues. They are incapable of working with the workforce and insist on putting them down at every opportunity. Morale is at an all time low. They look for the negative in everything and fail to recognise positive achievements. Good ideas coming from the shop floor are dismissed. If you like being treated like a step child apply now.
