What’s it like working at State Library of Victoria?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees at the State Library of Victoria appreciate the beautiful architecture and amazing building, as well as the opportunity to work with intelligent and passionate colleagues from diverse backgrounds and a great range of professions. They value the access to great resources and fascinating collections, including archived original material. Working for a large organisation provides professional development opportunities, and some reviewers indicate there is a good work-life balance in terms of sticking to average hours.

However, there are some potential challenges, such as concerns about management decisions and a perceived lack of opportunities for growth in certain divisions. Depending on the division, the workload may not be reasonable for some employees. Some feel there are too many processes and paperwork that could be streamlined. Additionally, there are indications of a culture of overwork being promoted, despite stated commitments to work-life balance.

    Great people but long hours
The good thingsBeautiful architecture, intelligent people who are passionate about their work and the Library.
The challengesCulture of 'overwork' promoted by management. Lip service to 'work life balance' resulting in long hours for the support/ enabler functions.

It was a mixture of working on developing exciting material working alongside focussed and great staff with the unhappy experience of seeign good work 'butchered'
The good thingsThe opportunity shape a start-up idea and to write original copy for particular readers (Year 12 students) plus unlimited access to archived original material relating to the topics I was researching. Thrilling to page through documents 100-200 years old.
The challengesFitting material already carefully produced to a specific brief and seeing it chopped (not edited with thought of the original ideas) to fit the dimensions later decided would be the space allowed for written copy and the assumption (wrong, in my opinion) that students at that level wouldn't read passages mored the 200 words in extent.

Rewarding place to work with an amazing diversity of professions onsite.
The good thingsDiversity of the staff, high levels of professionalism, and great range of different and interesting professions present on site.
The challengesPrior to 2016: Too much red tape, overbearing organisational structure with little flexibility for individual contributions, poor financial decisions by the executive/board.
