    Manager Fleet Services
    Apr 2026
Gosford NSW 22502 to 3 years in the role, current employee
On the whole, I would definitely recommend Benevolent as a flexible, fun and rewarding place to work
The good thingsTwo parts I most enjoy (there are others!) - Working in fleet and with hundreds of drivers and vehicles provides lots of opportunities to be innovative and apply outside the box thinking to resolve our internal customer base issues. On a more personal front, our broader directorate-wide team is fairly close knit and show genuine care for each other, this makes me want to show up to work each day and to be there for others.
The challengesLike most not-for-profits, fleet can often be seen as a non-essential service when compared to front line, client facing services. This means that business improvement opportunities can be limited especially when considering available funding, which when compared to other more mature fleets, means that we are required to use systems that are more manual and prone to data related issues which at times can be frustrating.

Constant opportunities to learn, grow and develop. Incredibly proud to work at Benevolent!
The good thingsI love the culture and the values of The Benevolent Society. We work with likeminded people that are doing their very best to improve the lives of others every single day. The complexity of the work keeps it challenging and interesting with regular career opportunities and growth available.
The challengesThe Benevolent Society has grown and changed quickly over the years and there is still some catch up to do with our systems, but teams work hard to deliver and be as innovative as possible.

Still here, loving it. Plenty of growth opportunities.
The good thingsEveryone is truly lovely, the work is meaningful and impactful and I feel like even the smallest things I do contribute to a greater cause.
The challengesParking at Glebe is tough, need to move the car every 2 hours.

Great clients, ok benefits, disgraceful conduct
The good thingsThe WFH balance and other benefits were quite nice. Some of the other client facing staff were some of the nicest and most dedicated people I have had the pleasure of knowing. Clients typically very appreciative and great to work with.
The challengesManagement are so disconnected from the work and teams they have no idea how to support nor take the time to listen to the needs of staff. Poor culture concerns and conduct complaints get swept under rugs. The people voicing concerns become targeted by leadership and made to feel like the staff member is the problem instead of the perpetrators. The people struggling have their work taken from them and given to high achievers with no appreciation with no support provided to struggling staff. Just an expectation that high achievers constantly bail services out of trouble. No room for growth. Management more interested in being friends with favourite team members and ignoring the rest rather than being a supervisor. Complete disregard for policy when it suits, even at a HR level. Values across the org are paper values and rarely demonstrated internally towards staff.

Terrible, top heavy management - glad to leave.
The good thingsHad the privilege of working with some amazing clients and knowing you were really making a difference to people with a disability's lives.
The challengesTerrible management - played people off each other, played favourites. Did not adjust quota's even in the height of the Pandemic. Pushed staff to breaking point. For an NGO who is supposedly all about social justice and people's rights they treat their staff appallingly.

An organization full of potential hindered by its own red tape
The good thingsAmazing work life balance. But this can depend on which department you work. WFH policy is very solid, even for frontline staff. There are some amazing people in the organization that will be the main reason you would stay. There is a positive, supportive culture that allows for open conversations. Managers will actively listen and provide constructive feedback.
The challengesRED TAPE! There is a never ending roll of red tape. Everything moves incredibly slowly and proper change management does not exist. The organization is unfortunately starting to fall behind on employee benefits and appropriate pay rates. Once you get to a management role, you are expected to do a lot more work for little reward. It is a non-for-profit, so there is some expectation that you push a little harder, but sometimes it becomes pushing a boulder up a hill. The best way to put it, its a community service, its about the people, and they know how to treat people with respect and integrity. its corporate structure is quite weak. everything moves at a snails pace and can be years before something is enacted, and even then it can be quite a poor attempt in deploying and promoting change. The supporting departments are understaffed and overworked.

awful but that was years ago
The good thingsNothing. I went there from ADHC expecting a positive experience but it started badly and that was nothing to do with me,just the culture of the place. There was so much wrong with it.We stated calling it The Malignant Society. I am sure it must have improved since then but not while I was there.
The challengesJust getting out of bed to go there.

Very poor culture and high turnover as no support to staff or care for the clients/ participants.
The good thingsTeam of dedicated people caring for vulnerable people, who will do whatever it takes to get the clients/ participants the support they require.
The challengesExtreme micromanagement and rudeness from managment. No understanding of the sector or of their responsibilities as they are very young in the role with very little experience in the sector. Requires staff to constantly cover for management mistakes. Management focussed on their image, numbers and money, rather than being client/ participant focused and understanding how business works. No support for staff, and expected to work night and weekends to get through the amount of work. Complaints and feedback not heard, very poor culture and high turnover due to burnout and horrible treatment by management.

Good money for new career therapist. Not even worth the time as their salary caps out at around 2 years plus experience.
The good thingsThey provide full pay during lockdown
The challengesManagement would rather paint walls than buy equipment needed to offer therapeutic services to clients. Expect therapist to bring in their own equipment. More interested in virtual signaling and internet activism than actually providing the best care possible to their clients.

Initially it was all well and good but few months in and original colours of the organisation was seen. The benevolent society couldn't care less about staff safety even after multiple incidents, and they like saying that they are focused on staff safety and work life balance which is a load of crap You won't get the opportunities to grow professionally and personally until unless you fight for what you deserve from long. No exit interview was conducted, no thanks and makes you feel like garbage
The good thingsSalary packaging and the team I was working with
The challengesEverything. Work life balance is tremendously poor.

Not the organisation to work for if you value your mental health
The good thingsOpportunities to undertake meaningful work with families
The challengesComplete lack of support from management. Managers and Team Leaders encourage and support discomfort and poor relations within teams and seek out opportunities to ensure that employees are too broken to seek help . If you seek out support you will be told you are the problem.

TBS is a wonderful organisation focused on support and kindness to clients and staff alike.
The good thingsThe Benevolent Society is a wonderful place to work. I constantly felt supported, heard and was encouraged to progress throughout the 2.5 years I was there. The management was understanding, compassionate and I felt totally supported. The company as a whole is, in my opinion, the best run organisation in Australia. They care about their staff and provide ample resources to complete your role, promote training and advance your practice. Regular supervision, flexibility around personal situations and understanding was emphasised. On the ground, the staff was extremely stable with low turnover and a lovely workplace culture even throughout COVID. I would 1000% recommend TBS and had I not relocated to another region, would absolutely have continued to work for them. A great, well resourced NGO with a kind work culture.
The challengesI can not think of one challenge. This is a great organisation.

    Team was great, management poor.
The good thingsThe multidisciplinary team structure and the opportunities to learn from each other.
The challengesMicromanagement is at the core of the management structure. Heavy focus on KPIs rather than the quality of the services being delivered. Management do not have a proper understanding of HR policies. Clear that organisation values $ more than the clients and staff welfare.
