What’s it like working at The University of Newcastle?

    AI summary of recent reviews

The University of Newcastle offers a professional yet flexible working environment with excellent work-life balance opportunities. Employees particularly value the collaborative and inclusive culture, comprehensive benefits package including superannuation, and the supportive team environment. The beautiful campus setting and facilities also contribute to a positive working experience.

However, some challenges include navigating the complex organisational structure and administrative processes, particularly for new employees. The decision-making process can be slow due to bureaucratic requirements, and some areas face resource constraints and workload pressures. Practical considerations such as parking availability during peak times can also present challenges for staff.

Regular restructures, no clear plans to manage workloads, but good super & nice people
The good thingsThe superannuation and leave benefits are good. The staff and students you work with day-to-day are generally good humans.
The challengesGo in ready to ride the waves of restructure and cost-cutting in education. Senior leadership do not communicate clearly about the regular organisational restructures that only seem to affect mid-level staff. There's no clear plan shared, and communication is vague on how the knock-on effects of removing roles, increased workload, and unclear reporting lines will be managed for the remaining staff.

During my time with the University of Newcastle you meet people from all age groups and nationalities striving to solve environmental issues impacting the world we live in today and for the future.
The good thingsAcademic and student research into environmental issues with proposed outcomes and solutions. Flexible work arrangements, good salary and Superannuation benefits. Staff training in implementation of upgraded and new computer systems.
The challengesStaff cutbacks meant workload increased.

A flexible and friendly place to study and work with great people and facilities.
The good thingsIt’s got that professional office vibe but still feels really flexible and relaxed. People are super friendly and supportive, and the facilities are convenient and comfy to use. Everything’s pretty well set up for getting work done.
The challengesSome admin or organisational stuff can be a bit confusing at first, especially when you’re new and still figuring things out. But as you get more involved and familiar with how things work, it starts to make sense, so no worries, you’ll find your place.
