What’s it like working at Victoria Legal Aid?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees consistently praise their colleagues at Victoria Legal Aid, describing them as dedicated, hard-working, and brilliant to work with in a positive and collaborative environment. Staff appreciate the meaningful nature of the work, which makes a tangible difference to people's lives and supports a great cause. The organisation offers flexible work arrangements with good support for working mothers, along with salary packaging benefits. The office spaces are well-maintained with new technology, fostering strong collegial bonds.

However, there are some potential challenges, including concerns about management capability at senior levels and communication gaps between staff and management. The prevalence of contract positions with limited duration can make it difficult to secure permanent roles and retain talented staff. Workload can be high with strict deadlines, and demand for services sometimes exceeds capacity. Career progression opportunities may be limited due to the organisation's size, and salaries are lower than private practice, though many feel the benefits outweigh this. Some employees have also noted that HR support for workplace conflicts could be improved.

    Be idealistic elsewhere
The good thingsMajority of people underneath management level are dedicated, hard working and competent. A pleasure to work with.
The challengesIncompetent directors and above, displaying toxic behaviours to subordinates. Incredibly self interested and self serving, instead of being committed to the cause. Very high workload and hours with a very low salary. Also a complete disregard for the vicarious trauma from distressing material and interactions with clients.
