Good team culture and learning, but poor management, inequality, and instability.
The good thingsThe team culture is positive, and I learned many basic and intermediate skills. Working during school holidays is usually very relaxed, and there are plenty of opportunities to communicate with a wide range of people. Students and teachers are usually very friendly.
The challengesUpper management is often out of touch, with noticeable inequality. Pay rises do not keep up with inflation. Some admin tools are restricted to certain staff who act as gatekeepers, making tasks difficult without constant follow-up. Handover and documentation are poor, often requiring going through multiple people to find information. There is workplace gossip, ongoing cost-cutting, and recurring redundancies. Project management is largely handled by contractors whose contributions can be unclear. Some staff are treated the same despite openly contributing significantly less work.

Poor leadership and processes make for an OK working environment
    The good thingsFlexible working arrangements
The challengesSenior leadership team is lacking experience to successfully lead what can sometimes be an overall complex, archaic business into the future. Overall skill level and capacity of administrative/IT/ancillary staff is far below that of what you would expect from a business of this size with this level of turnover. Poor internal processes. Slow to adapt to change. Lots of people who have been there for far too long with little to no experience in any other business or industry.

The good thingsFood at cafeteria is nice
The challengesPoor management who are not open to change, most admin staff have been there too long and are very rude, don’t take or give opportunity to provide ideas or feedback, complete lack of staff culture, little to no employee benefits or useful professional development. No succession planning or opportunities. Low salary compared to other independent schools. Students can also be very entitled.

A good school that is going down the wrong track.
The good thingsStudents are great. Staff are hardworking.
The challengesToo corporate. Education should never be about the money but rather building good relationships with students so that they are eager to learn.

    Good school with good leadership.
The good thingsGood balance. Great staff to work with. Clear expectations.
The challengesI wasn't given a sports allotment which was good. I think if you have to do sport this can be challenging. Schools need to stop expecting staff to undertake sport supervision. But that's a general comment for all schools with this expectation.

Fantastic resources, lovely students but appalling management.
The good thingsThe students are fantastic as are the resources you’d expect from an affluent school such as this.
The challengesPoor management is the downfall of this school which trickles down into toxic working environments where equality is dismissed. It’s such a shame as the school could do so much better with strong leadership from above. This makes for an unhappy and stressful working environment to say the least.

    Looks nice on the outside.
The good thingsThe kids are mostly wonderful, the technology is great, the freedom to teach lessons however you want is also a benefit. You get to develop your pedagogy and teaching practice.
The challengesHR and payroll are incompetent, management is deaf to the needs of the students and teachers. There is no focus on pastoral care. There is no support for teachers. Unless you have been there 40+ years, there is no positive collegiality among staff. It is a toxic work environment.

An environment to be wary of
The good thingsOccasionally (approx every 3-4 years) have the opportunity to work with latest generation equipment
The challengesVery poor management, with a lack of strategic direction. Micromanagement in particular felt inexcusable, given their lack of knowledge in fields in which their employees were specialists in

Disappointing to be in a school that has such great kids and staff with Principals who belittle and disregard staff
The good thingsSome great core staff, kids are amazing
The challengesManagement have no idea the pressure they put on staff and can't look after staff, ignorant and in it for the glory and handshakes but can't understand how to support staff
