The good, the bad and the ugly.
The good thingsI enjoyed being a part of this organisation as everyone in the IT area was genuinely there to be of assistance. They cared about their staff and as a result the staff cared about Westpac.
The challengesWhen I first started at Westpac / St. George, there was a lot of giving back to the employees. however, after Westpac took over St. George, they started doing some taking away from the employees. Also, they are having "restructures" pretty much every year after this occurence. Getting rid of staff just as it's coming up to Christmas time of the year, when nobody is employing anybody for a couple of months.

    A one-sided relationship.
The good thingsI've enjoyed the impact that you make on customers. Being able to help those in need with something impactful, and then hearing from those customers about how much they appreciate your work is what kept me going.
The challengesThe level of care and reciprocity from Westpac to their employees. No matter what you do, even if you become nationally recognised, Westpac will only ever see you as a number. I received high praise for my work within Westpac, as my superiors received written letters from customers which received national recognition, but despite that, when the time came to discuss the renewal of my contract my previous efforts were not sufficient. What extra you do within Westpac, even though you may be told is appreciated, does not actually mean a long and successful career with them.

most employees would last roughly 3 months (high turnover) coming to work you don't feel comfortable and you must have the same opinion as everyone else.If that sounds good this is the job for you .
The good thingsLearning new procedures and helping customers with their financial problems
The challengesThe Base of the learning and the time frame set was designed to make you fail.Their was no time to learn the procedures correctly and most of the management staff will not help you, even my colleagues coning from different financial backgrounds did not last.this cascades down the from the chain as the number one thing they care about is opening accounts not solving problems and if you want to spend all of your time dealing with complaints this would be the job for you.

The good thingsGood perks Excellent office environment Overall - supportive team environment High performing Competitive salary with sound hybrid work available
The challengesThere's just never enough hours in 1 day to meet to ever more complicated targets. When in the sales division Westpac is a whole other beast !

Westpac has shut all the projects and made me and my colleagues redundant. It is a very volatile environment as of 2023. No growth and career opportunities.
The good thingsOffice location - Kent street and Barangaroo offices are very close to the train staiton
The challengesUncertain project environment. Difficult stakeholders. No strategic direction.

    Great Bank with immense opportunities.
The good thingsGreat Bank with a lot of opportunity for anyone to learn and grow across the entire Banking Sector.
The challengesOld technology, processes and systems that frequently break (with the exception of payment system - it is old but state of art) and can be very expensive to touch.

Wish I had taken the other job I was offered.
    The good thingsGreat immediate team
The challengesNo direction from the top. Westpac Group and HR have no care for its staff, but merely virtue signal. All smoke and mirrors. Long hours and no care for staff with health issues.

Middle management focussed on creating a Hostile work environment
The good thingsThe teams are dedicated to making work happen in an environment which challenges their ability to work effectively.
The challengesThe Pseudo-agile environment which creates ambiguity in roles to be played, frameworks to be followed, translated the traditional way of working to agile execution framework which creates an enormous amount of waste as deliverables. (Documents, builds, instability of teams) Middle-management across multiple teams including mine believes in hostility to get work done as per their understanding and sidelines value. Only some of the people are good leaders. The rest of the middle management (design leads, Product owners etc.) are responsible to create a hostile work environment. Challenging the status quo is prohibited at the group as a culture.

Toxic work environment which is compensated with a higher than adverage pay rate.
The good thingsHigh pay rate, lots of benefits including shopping discounts and opportunities for progression. Constant ongoing training was a bonus
The challenges- Toxic colleagues - overworked, long hours - constantly pushed to work harder even when you have reached your limit - limited help from management - expect the unexpected to be a normal everyday part of the job

    Positive, professional culture
The good thingsWell organised, professional culture. Some very strong and accomplished management who are good to work for.
The challengesPockets of usual suspects driving personal agendas at expense of organisation, however these are largely the exception and not impossible to manage.

    Overall very good. Would recommend.
The good thingsBeen around the banks and as far as people welfare and being decent folk they are high up there. The depth of talent and opportunities to learn are reasonably good. On each engagement I mostly found I could shape the role as I liked and opportunities to progress and learn are good. Have worked at their main sites Barangaroo, Kent Street and Kogarah all of which are good environments.
The challengesSome weak senior management and average decision making. Some there have no accountability and the place overlooks and protects them. Means getting things done is not easy. Not quite the elite in terms of strategy and vision but overall offers some good standards in terms of technology and implementation.

The good things - If you're lucky, your direct team and manager are lovely - onboarding for new starters was a great experience
The challengesgroups are a little cliquey - not as inclusive as other places

Would not reccomend to work in operations at Westpac.
The good thingsOperations is under budget. Company cares more about making money than caring for employees. All work is highly monitored and micromanaging the productivity.
The challengesHard to have a good environment with the RTM system used to monitor productivity.
