Engaging work, supportive environment, career progression, work/life balance, staff perks
The good thingsMy colleagues, the support from all departments on the floor and administration, the education from various role specific courses, the finely tuned operation procedures that any hospitality “lifer” would appreciate. Strong work ethic gets noticed and recognised - facilitating an achievable job progression pathway for all levels of experience.
The challengesVolume of patrons the venue can facilitate can be a rewarding challenge

My experience at Gateway Inn has been rewarding, offering continuous growth through supportive teamwork, hands-on learning, and opportunities to develop both personally and professionally.
The good thingsIt’s great to be part of the Wests Group, especially at Gateway Inn, where the team is genuinely supportive and the work environment is positive. The company offers valuable opportunities for professional development through training and study support, which has helped me grow in confidence and develop in my role. I'm also grateful to be part of a team that collaborates well and looks out for each other.
The challengesOne of the challenges of working here over time has been managing workloads during periods of limited staffing. At times, this can make it difficult to keep up with demand, especially during busy shifts.

Toxic workplace with a very Authoritarian approach
The good thingsMost staff were amazing and made some friends for life.
The challengesHR was non existent and the club did not support its staff. Patrons could treat female staff as they pleased as long as they were spending large amounts of money and in the end the clubs actions didn't align with my values.

My experience with Wests has been an overall positive influence on my life, offering me a number of opportunities to grow and learn professionally.
The good thingsThe Wests Group, Australia offers a range of job opportunities and career paths and provide diversified exposure to many segments of the hospitality and entertainment industries. From my own personal experience, I have been provided opportunities for professional growth and career progression. Working within a supportive and forward-thinking team has been both fulfilling and motivating.
The challengesBeing a large organisation, it can be challenging to keep all employees and department up to date with changes in the organisation however Wests has and continues to address this matter with a range of communication strategies.

I made some great connections, but overall the place stinks. Not real progression within the ranks. The higher-ups are stuck in the past, very old views. In the end, had to leave as they didn’t align with my values.
The good thingsThey pay well. There’s good perks.
The challengesToxic all the way through the company. Communication throughout is poor, was although improving

Vibrant community to grow your potential.
The good thingsWests has a friendly, great internal culture with a focus on customer experience. There are fun perks like the cheap gym membership, 40% discounted meals and more. It's a great company to work with.
The challengesFor me, I lived too far away to make the job sustainable.

The good thingsWests is a progressive Group, with further growth on the horizon. There is plenty of opportunity to develop and advance your career, across Wests many businesses.
The challengesThe pace of change can be challenging for some (but exciting for others).

Glad I don't work there anymore.
The good thingsHourly pay was pretty good
The challengesThe workplace environment wasn't professional, you had to check the roster twice everyday in case of changes (I was told they would email the roster but that didn't happen.) Toxicity among the other workers, felt like walking on eggshells. Didn't feel comfortable, when I did speak up about it, there wasn't any help. Just excuses for those that were rude.

Not ideal for a person that expects kindness and a thank you
The good thingsMade some new friends, learnt how to make a nice bed
The challengesBeing a casual and expected to be available 7 days a week if needed. Work a full time roster as a casual with no sick days or annual leave. expected to do a 5 star job in 10 minutes. No thank you’s or recognition from management for hard work. Expected to clock off early and do my workload in half the time to save wages for the company. Hours are rounded down. Felt very undervalued and miserable which I took home to personal life.

The good things- The location is beautiful - The customers are usually happy - Easy to make sales - Most work days arent too bad, but the challenges make even the good days bad
The challenges- Rostering (a constant challenge) - Low pay - No overtime pay - Management dont listen to staff concerns - Hardly any phone service

Great Staff Environment But Nowhere To Grow
The good thingsGreat staff in the front of house sections, super friendly and mostly easy to work with. Worked in functions, bistro, gaming, bar, and restaurants across multiple venues. Discounted gym membership, 40% off food whilst on break at work, discount on accommodation at certain times of year.
The challengesNo work life balance, you are expected to work christmas day, new years, public holidays and school holidays and it will most likely be denied approval if you try to apply for leave in these times. No opportunity for growth within your role. Being such a big company HR don't provide much for you to go any further with the company, so you either are left doing the same thing or leave to find something else.

Below average management/HR show staff no support.
The good thingsGym discount and 40% off some food.
The challengesManagement/HR expects too much of staff while not showing any support, they are happy to give themselves time off for holidays while staff don't get to see their families on holidays.

Not the worst but not the best
The good thingsThe company pays well and hours are flexible because the clubs are open for long hours. The role is easy and well supported.
The challengesNo work-life balance, employees are expected to work all public holidays including Christmas Day. Casual employees get denied days off more often than not. Employees don't even get a free or discounted membership to the club.

I would NOT suggest anyone work here under any circumstances. My life has never been the same since.
The good thingsYou get a small discount on pretty average food.
The challengesHR is a mess, they have created an extremely toxic environment and this is why they have such a high staff turnover. I and many other staff were so incredibly stressed and anxious about every shift. Management don't stick up for anyone when HR force people to quit by causing an unbearable workalike.
