Avoid at all costs. Toxic work culture and bare minimum expectations are never met.
The good thingsCreate kids to teach and community to be a part of
The challengesManagement is toxic and values money over employees and clients. No concern for further training of staff over the bare minimum. Staff concerns are not taken seriously.

It used to be great - but now is a toxic environment
The good thingsSome of the staff are amazing people, managers and educators
The challengesThis used to be an amazing company to work for. In the last 12 months and a few upper management changes including a new CEO the company is more focused on money where they used to be about the people, the children, their employees. There is a lot of favourtism within the company. If you are friendly with certain people you will get promoted if not you are overlooked. There is minimal support for services from upper management, but the expectation is high with a lot of administration and few hours to complete it in.

Not the greatest work with less hours and shifts and getting treated badly
The good thingsChildren, parents and some of the staff workers
The challengesI had high hopes when I joined YMCA and hearing about how big the company was. My experience is just not the best after the changes of coordinators. There were lack of communication from the coordinator, bad mouthing and favouritism at work. When asked to have more shifts or if can go permeant, was dismissed and ignored. The biggest disappointment was communication was often inconsistent, and feedback was either dismissed or ignored altogether. Therefore, I would not recommend working here as there staff who are not qualified and should not be in the room by themselves with the children. It is not fair when I want to help to do tasks such as head counts or mark the role, they rather pick other staff to do it. Giving false feedback when they don't observe properly and make false accusations. Its not very stable nor giving out less hours and shift to work.

Not recommended. Many of the students genuinely benefitted from such schools because of the emphasis on student wellbeing. However, this does not mean that teachers will stay long.
The good thingsPlenty of student free time allocated to teachers and youth workers.
The challengesI was hoping to do great things but was disappointed. Poor organisation. Heavy-handed leadership that claims to be supportive. Rigid curriculum that sometimes demands too much of the students. Results were manufactured by some questionable pedagogy. Teacher input was minimal. Teachers are made to feel they know nothing. Few classroom resources compared to a standard high school. Out-of-date software. Science was poorly resourced leading to classes being potentially more theoretical than a mainstream class. Communication was patchy. The very high teacher turnover did not help solve the problems.

Rewarding Career: Purpose, Growth, and Great People at The Y
The good thingsMy tenure at The Y has been marked by significant personal & professional development. The Y consistently provides opportunities to expand skills & embrace new challenges, which I've found deeply rewarding. The collaborative spirit here is exceptional, largely due to my supportive colleagues.
The challengesCommitment to our impact means some demanding periods, but supportive colleagues always make these manageable and worthwhile.

Mission Driven, Impactful and surrounded by like-minded people!
The good thingsThe people at YMCA are great! Everyone is so passionate about what they do. It is great working for an organisation and people that are so mission driven.
The challengesThere is nothing that makes me not want to come to work. Any issues that I come across, I have been able to work it out with the team. Like any job, there are good days and bad days - but at least on my ‘bad days’, I feel like my opinion matters.

Getting to making a real difference every single day.
The good thingsI’ve been with Y Queensland for 28 years. The staff, members, and mission of Y Queensland inspire me daily. As a not-for-profit, its diverse business units have a significant impact on the communities we serve. Throughout my career, I've experienced remarkable growth and advancement.
The challengesTo be honest, there is nothing I don't like which is why I have been with the Y Queensland for 28 years and counting.

Since I first started, I have felt supported by not only my direct supervisor, but upline management. They have been receptive to my ideas and encouraged development within my role. I am loving the fact that I can work with any cohort - it is not restricted. But my team are lovely and very easy to collaborate with.
The good thingsEveryone has been very friendly and supportive
The challengesSome things have taken time for approval or action

Whether you’re working in the head office, community services, fitness, recreation, or youth programs, you truly feel like you’re making a difference. I would highly recommend Y Queensland to anyone looking for a meaningful and rewarding career with a company that genuinely cares about its people and the communities it serves. I feel incredibly lucky to have been part of this amazing team!
The good thingsY Queensland is an organisation that truly lives its values, fostering a supportive, inclusive, and purpose-driven culture. From leadership to frontline teams, there’s a genuine commitment to making a positive impact in the community, and it’s incredibly rewarding to be part of that.
The challengesI can honestly say that I haven’t encountered any major challenges in my role at Y Queensland. Of course, like any workplace, there are busy periods and occasional hurdles, but the supportive culture, great leadership, and strong teamwork make it easy to navigate any challenges that arise.

Teachers should avoid ever working for the Y Schools!
The good thingsA few good colleagues and friends across campuses. Finishing work for the day. Holidays are longer than state schools. Leaving the organisation and its chaos behind me.
The challengesPoor school leadership at school and campus level. Unworkable curriculum. Few classroom resources that you didn't have to pay for yourself. Teamwork was eroded by jealousy and gossiping of non-teaching staff. Very high teacher turnover, where youth workers run the schools. The Y Schools are against their students achieving, because its funding depends upon keeping kids down. Therefore, most teachers don't last beyond 18 months. Four Principals in four years says it all really.

They are a company that take care of their employees and provide a multitude of training and professional development. Management are supportive and knowing that the work you do everyday directly helps many people on the community is really rewarding.
The good thingsPositive culture and team environment. So many opportunities for professional development, growth and career advancement.
The challengesNil - they're a fantastic company to work for
