This job ruined other jobs for me, and I mean that in a good way!
The good thingsWhere to start. Zoos Victoria truly value their staff. You always have full support from all levels, communication is brilliant, and the safety standards are next to none. Obvious perks are opportunities to see animals behind the scenes, as well as seeing them every day no matter which department you work in. Even though most roles are contract or casual, this provides a very flexible lifestyle while still receiving one of the highest casual pay rates I've seen in retail/ticket sales. It's such a joy to work here that I've seen staff get full-time jobs elsewhere, and still work weekends here for fun.
The challengesThe usual kind when working with the public in a sales setting, but the support from management helps take a lot of pressure off.

Happy & fun place to work, great benefits & perfect for people who prefer working mostly during school holidays & weekends.
The good thingsFun & happy environment. Excellent perks & benefits!
The challengesFlat out & super busy on school holidays & long weekends, so no annual leave is usually approved during these times, so this is very challenging for working parents. Irregular & very few shifts available outside of school holidays (during regular weekdays).

Overall different workplace to usual retail and tourism sectors.

The challengesFinding work on the off season is challenging as a casual. Shift cuts in off peak times is quite high.

    Need to improve
The good thingsWork/ life balance, some good people to work with and some training provided
The challengesManagement are reactive, once you hit a certain pay level there’s zero chance of a pay rise or promotion, jobs are given to under qualified staff, opinions are rarely listened too or valued, staff with knowledge are seen as a threat to management. Focus seems to be on the wrong things a lot of the time.

    Caring family environment
The good thingsI have been working for Zoos Vic for 7 months now and during my time so far I have received so much support from not only the people I work closely with but people in different areas of the zoo. It has been so fantastic so far.
The challengesDifficult customers can make it challenging but it constantly gives you opportunities to learn how to deal with them each time so the next time you won't be startled or sometimes intimidated.

Melbourne Zoo provides a great overall working experience, in an enviroments you can't easily find.
The good thingsThere is no question that Melbourne Zoo provides a unique working environment (I type this as I listen to the incredible sound of lions roaring) but it is also one of the best I have had the privilege of working in. The people are amazing. They are selfless when it comes to animals and their wellbeing which makes them the kind of people you really want to spend time with. On your lunch break you can spend time walking around the lovely gardens or chatting to a red panda.
The challengesBeing not for profit, there is always something else you could do around the place if you just had just a little more in the budget, and also you may find the salary a little lower than what might be on offer at large multinational or corporate companies for the same role, but it attracts people who care less about the money and more about the difference they can make in the world so it probably won't matter to you anyway.
