What's it like to be an Assistant Manager?
An Assistant Manager is usually responsible for supporting a Manager of a company, business or organisation. They may also be in charge of hiring and training new employees, creating rosters for employees and providing customer service. Assistant Managers tend to work in areas such as hospitality, tourism, health and retail. While Assistant Manager duties may vary depending on the position, the skills these professionals usually have are the ability to think on their feet to quickly resolve issues, exceptional communication and customer service skills and excellent organisational skills.
Tasks and duties
- Ensuring the venue, store or premises run smoothly by overseeing employees and by developing systems and procedures for operational efficiency.
- Supporting the Manager by recruiting, hiring and training new employees and providing a comprehensive induction process.
- Handling and resolving customer queries and complaints as they arise.
How to become an Assistant Manager
Formal qualifications are not usually required to work as an Assistant Manager in Australia as previous experience is highly regarded and on-the-job training is typically provided. However, qualifications in the field may help you when you are applying for work.
- 1.Decide on the area you want to work in. Depending on the setting, you may need to hold a current Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certificate or Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG) certificate.
- 2.If you are looking to further your career, you can work your way up and apply for promotions to more senior roles.
- 3.You may also wish to consolidate your experience with further qualifications, such as a Certificate IV in Leadership and Management (BSB40520) or a Diploma of Leadership and Management (BSB50420).
