What's it like to be a Biosecurity Officer?
Biosecurity Officers help to protect the environment and agricultural industries against potentially damaging imports and exports such as pests and diseases. They assess trade documentation, perform inspections of people, cargo and carriers, and conduct surveillance.

Tasks and duties
- Inspecting cargo, people, vessels, aircrafts and goods for unwanted pests and diseases.
- Reviewing documentation for imported and exported goods.
- Upholding biosecurity policies and legislation and communicating requirements to travellers and members of industry.
- Providing guidance and information about biosecurity risk items including food, vehicles, animals and organic material.
- Undertaking surveillance and assurance activities.
A Biosecurity Officer may work in a variety of settings including airports, seaports, offices and quarantine facilities. They usually work for state or federal government departments.
How to become a Biosecurity Officer
You need a licence from the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (AWE) to work as a Biosecurity Officer. Experience working in a public sector role and the completion of relevant certifications will also be beneficial. On-the-job training is provided. A driver’s licence, Police Check and medical checks may be required.
- 1.Consider completing a Certificate IV in Government Investigations (PSP40416). This course will prepare you to work as part of a government investigation team and meet the ethical and legislative requirements to work in public service. You may be able to complete this qualification while working.
- 2.Gain experience in an entry-level government investigations role.
- 3.Apply to become a Biosecurity Officer via the AWE website. You may need to complete additional certifications to perform certain job functions.
- 4.Enhance your career options by completing a bachelor degree, such as a Bachelor of Biosecurity Science. This usually takes three years.
