What's it like to be a Civil Designer?
Civil Designers use computer-aided design (CAD) programs to draft, produce, scale and fine-tune drawings and maps for key infrastructure and construction projects. This may include roads, bridges, railways, earthworks, and commercial, industrial and residential developments.
Tasks and duties
- Preparing conceptual and formal design drawings using CAD programs or other engineering software for review by engineers.
- Interpreting civil engineering drawings and building plans.
- Preparing designs for land subdivisions, road infrastructure, drainage, sewer and water systems.
- Ensuring designs take into account associated planning, survey, traffic,electrical and landscaping requirements.
- Read maps and land surveys to note land grading, nearby structures and other factors that could affect the placement of new installations.
How to become a Civil Designer
To become a Civil Designer you are usually required to have completed some formal training, which may include a Bachelor of Engineering majoring in Civil Engineering or an Associate Degree in Engineering Technology. You will also need to demonstrate proficiency CAD software.
- 1.Complete a qualification in civil engineering or engineering technology.
- 2.While you’re completing your formal training seek out internship opportunities and develop your practical experience with 12d Model and CAD programs, such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, InRoads, HydroCAD, and StormCAD.
