What's it like to be a Structural Engineer?
Structural Engineers are specialists within the field of Civil Engineering. They specialise in ensuring that the materials and framework used for construction of load-bearing infrastructure are safe, stable and can support the design of the structure. Structural Engineers apply principles of maths and physics to determine whether structures and the materials they are made from can withstand the stresses of their environment and use.
Tasks and duties
- Investigating and surveying build sites to determine the suitability of the land for the requirements of a project.
- Designing new structures that are safe and stable by applying principles of mathematics and physics.
- Inspecting structures during and after construction to ensure they are properly built.
How to become a Structural Engineer
To become a professionally accredited Structural Engineer you are usually required to complete an undergraduate degree and a Master of Engineering.
- 1.Complete a Bachelor of Engineering (majoring in civil engineering). This is usually a four-year course. Course structure and entry requirements vary between institutions.
- 2.Structural Engineering is a specialty field of Civil Engineering, so some additional training is often required. After completing a Bachelor of Engineering, you may decide to continue studying in order to obtain an Honours degree with a focus on Structural Engineering.
- 3.Consider further education such as a postgraduate degree in engineering in order to attain the level of Professional Engineer.
