What's it like to be a Clinical Coder?
Also known as a Medical Records Coder, Clinical Coders translate descriptions of medical diagnoses and procedures into codes in order to record healthcare data within patients' medical records. As a Clinical Coder, you will use a universal coding system that is recognised throughout Australia. This is the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision Australian Modification, commonly referred to as ICD-10-AM.Clinical Coders work mainly in hospitals, but some may work in specialist research or for health insurance funds.Tasks and duties
- Reviewing patients’ medical records to identify all diagnoses, operations, and procedures.
- Clarifying any inconsistencies by consulting with the responsible medical professional and fixing any errors.
- Determining what diagnoses and procedures need to be coded for the patient’s current period of care, then coding them. Diagnoses and procedures need to meet certain criteria for coding, which is in accordance with the relevant standards.
- Maintaining ICD-10-AM coding books to ensure they are updated to the current version being used.
