What's it like to be a Communications Adviser?
Communications Advisers use words strategically to the advantage of the person, team or organisation they’re working with. They straddle the line between communications and public relations, helping the subject of their message-spinning strategy to be viewed in a positive light or achieve change.
Tasks and duties
- Acting as a media spokesperson.
- Initiating and maintaining relationships with key media contacts.
- Triaging and responding to media inquiries.
- Developing communications and integrated media strategies aligned with program objectives.
- Writing speeches, announcements, news releases, annual reports, website copy and video scripts.
- Working with key internal figures and teams to develop strategies and messaging.
- Organising or facilitating media training.
- Reporting back to the organisation regarding strategy performance.
- Disseminating ‘good news’ results stories.
- Supervising delivery of communications plan.
How to become a Communications Adviser
It’s not essential to hold qualifications to work as a Communications Adviser, but it may be an advantage.
- 1.Get your foot in the door as a Communications Officer or Public Relations Officer and gain experience and knowledge over time.
- 2.Complete a Bachelor of Communication at university. These degree take approximately 3 years full-time to complete. You'll need to meet the ATAR requirement or gain special admission through an alternative entry program.
- 3.Consider undertaking postgraduate qualifications, such as a Master of Strategic Communication.
