What's it like to be a Computer Numerical Control Operator?
Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Operators program and operate a range of machinery used in manufacturing. They calibrate, test and maintain equipment and run programs that turn raw materials into finished products and parts. Computer literacy and a keen eye for detail are central to the role of a Computer Numerical Control Operator. They work for companies in the manufacturing and transport and logistics industries.
Tasks and duties
- Selecting and assembling cutting tools.
- Interpreting blueprints and product specifications.
- Operating CNC machines such as lathes, grinders, lasers and mills.
- Loading and unloading raw materials and finished products.
- Inspecting finished products for fit and finish.
- Performing test runs and maintaining machines and equipment.
- Using a variety of Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software.
- Setting parameters of work cycle, including feed rate, positioning and speed.
How to become a Computer Numerical Control Operator
You are usually required to complete an apprenticeship to become a CNC Operator. An equivalent level of demonstrated experience in manufacturing and knowledge in CAM software may also be acceptable.
- 1.Complete an apprenticeship, such as the Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade (MEM30319). This is a three-year program consisting of a combination of on and off-the-job learning.
- 2.Develop your ability to work with multiple types of CAM software and keep yourself updated on new software developments.
