What's it like to be a Machinist?
A Machinist uses tools such as lathes, grinders, borers, shapers and mills to shape, form, fit and assemble parts of various products, tools, equipment and machines. Machinists usually work with metal or wood.
Tasks and duties
- Using lathes, mills and other workshop machinery to turn, mill, drill and complete components within specified dimensions and finish.
- Undertaking mechanical and visual inspections of fabricated parts to ensure they meet specifications, as required by the customer and/or company.
- Performing dimensional and mechanical testing as needed and reworking components as required.
How to become a Machinist
To become a Machinist, you will usually need to complete a relevant qualification in addition to an apprenticeship. It’s likely that you’ll also receive on-the-job training once you begin work.
- 1.Complete relevant VET qualifications, such as a Certificate III in Engineering (Mechanical Trade) (MEM30205) or Certificate III in Engineering (Fitting and Turning) (MEM30205). Complete an apprenticeship.
- 2.There are many pathways for Machinists who wish to specialise, such as becoming an Aircraft Machinist, Milling Machinist or an Automotive Machinist.
