What's it like to be a Development Manager?
Development Managers manage property development projects. They are property development experts who oversee a development project through its various phases including planning, construction, sales and leasing.
Tasks and duties
- Ensuring the timely and on–budget delivery of property development projects.
- Determining and developing project feasibility.
- Determining project costs and timelines.
- Selecting sites for development.
- Applying for construction and development approvals.
- Selecting contractors via tender process.
- Overseeing development project through planning, construction, sale and leasing phases.
- Overseeing the development of property sites in commercial, residential, retail, industrial or mixed–use zones.
- Applying project management skills and methodologies.
How to become a Development Manager
It is possible to work as a Development Manager without formal qualifications; however, around half of the people in this occupation have a university degree. Some have undertaken postgraduate study. It is also recommended to join the Australian Property Institute (API) upon graduating from an accredited course of study.
- 1.Complete a qualification such as the Bachelor of Property and Real Estate. This is typically a three–year course of full–time study.
- 2.Consider completing postgraduate study such as the Master of Project Management. This is typically a two–year course of full–time study.
- 3.Register with the API. Registration pathways vary depending on experience level and qualifications, but typically require the completion of an accredited course such as the Bachelor of Property and Real Estate.
- 4.You may need to consider building experience in an Assistant Development Manager role before progressing to a Development Manager role.
