What's it like to be a Drillers Assistant?
Drillers’ Assistants help set up, move, operate and dismantle drilling rigs and equipment in order to extract oil, natural gas, water or minerals from drilling sites. Drillers’ Assistants are usually employed by mining or oil companies, drilling contractors or farmers. Being a Driller’s Assistant is often a physically demanding job, so this role suits individuals who are physically strong and happy to take on manual work.
Tasks and duties
- Helping assemble and disassemble rigs and equipment at various sites by connecting pipes, casings, power cables, hoses and drill heads.
- Working closely with an experienced driller to regulate, control and service pumps and drilling equipment.
- Undertaking routine maintenance and repairs under the supervision of an experienced driller.
Working long hours on roster systems is usually part of being a Driller’s Assistant, as it involves working outdoors, underground or offshore for extended periods of time.
How to become a Drillers Assistant
It’s possible to work as a Driller’s Assistant without formal qualifications as it’s likely you’ll receive some training on the job or undertake a traineeship. However, qualifications in the field are usually well regarded by employers. To be employed as a Driller’s Assistant, you’ll need to be at least 18 years old, undergo a National Police Check and pass a pre-employment medical examination and drug and alcohol clearance.
- 1.Explore your options for undertaking qualifications in the area, such as a Certificate II or III in Drilling Operations, Drilling Offshore (oil or gas) or Well Servicing. These are usually qualifications that require the successful completion of Year 10.
- 2.To work in the construction industry, you must undertake safety induction training and have a Construction Induction Card (CIC). Check to see if your worksite also requires you to have a heavy vehicle drivers’ licence and a first aid certificate.
- 3.There are many avenues for Driller’s Assistants looking to further their career, such as moving into management or a supervisory role, or specialising in mineral exploration, gas drilling or water well drilling for commercial bores.
