How to become a Shotfirer

It’s important to obtain the appropriate licence for the class of work you’ll be carrying out as a Shotfirer. Licenses and qualifications may vary depending on the industry you work in. You may also be required to pass a National Police Check in order to work with explosives.

  1. Complete a Certificate IV in Surface Coal Mining - Open Cut Examiner (RII40215).
  2. Undertake a National Police Check.
  3. Check the additional licensing requirements for the type of work you’ll be carrying out (for example, fireworks, mining or construction).

Shotfiring is the best job to have in mining as it will never go autonomous & drill & blast teams become very close as you are in the trenches together day in day out. I recommend taking the challenge as a shotfirer if you are a perfectionist & are not afraid of hard work. Pretenders are soon left behind.
