How to become a Financial Planner


SEEK Learning
To become a Financial Planner, you need to complete an accredited degree. You also need to complete a year of professional experience to meet the requirements set by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

  1. Complete an accredited bachelor degree, such as a Bachelor of Business (Financial Planning). This usually takes three years of full-time study.
  2. Undertake a year of professional experience in an entry-level role under the supervision of a licensed Financial Planner.
  3. Gain certification with an industry association such as the Financial Advice Association Australia (FAAA) or Certified Financial Planner (CFP). While certification isn't mandatory, it can improve your employability.
  4. Consider broadening your skills and career options with an accredited postgraduate degree. You could study a Graduate Diploma of Financial Planning or Master of Financial Planning.
