What's it like to be a Fire Engineer?
Fire Engineers are specialist Engineers who assess the threat of fires and determine how to improve architectural structures and safety measures to prevent them. They work in many industries, including manufacturing, corporate organisations and government.
Fire Engineers often play an important role during the construction phase of a building to ensure projects are being carried out in accordance with fire safety techniques and regulations.
Tasks and duties
- Identifying the fire safety design objectives of a project.
- Developing fire strategies featuring fire escape routes, safety systems and access and facilities for fire services.
- Coordinating fire plans with relevant third parties, such as building management and local fire and rescue services.
- Ensuring fire strategies comply with relevant building regulations.
- Preparing fire safety engineering studies and reports.
- Inspecting new and existing buildings to ensure fire safety measures are adhered to.
- Creating computer simulations and modelling of building fire scenarios and occupant evacuation.
- Writing clear and succinct reports including audits.
How to become a Fire Engineer
- Complete an engineering degree, preferably specialising in fire science. This could be a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) (Honours). This usually takes four years of full-time study.
- Get hands-on work experience. Consider undertaking an internship with a fire safety engineering team while you study, or volunteer for a firefighting service such as the CFA.
- Depending on your state or territory, you may need to register as a professional engineer. You can apply for registration through Engineers Australia.
- Consider broadening your skills and career options by completing a postgraduate qualification. This could be a Graduate Certificate in Fire Safety Engineering or Master of Engineering (Civil).
