What's it like to be a Florist?
Florists select, prepare and arrange fresh and dried flowers for floral arrangements for sale or display. Floristry is suited to individuals who have high attention to detail, excellent knowledge of flower varieties and a flair for colour and design. Florists may be self-employed, work in a shop, warehouse environment or for a company that installs arrangements for events such as weddings and funerals.Did you find this video helpful?
Tasks and duties
- Planning, designing and arranging the supply, storage and arrangement of flowers, foliage and decorations.
- Using a variety of tools and containers to select, trim, treat and store flowers to extend their life.
- Advising customers on selection of flowers, wreaths and bouquets, in addition to packing, wrapping and organising delivery of floral arrangements.
How to become a Florist
To become a florist, a VET qualification is usually required, but you can also become a Florist through an apprenticeship or traineeship.
- 1.Explore available floristry courses, such as a Certificate III in Floristry (SFL30115) or Certificate IV in Floristry (SFL40115). These are usually courses with a mix of practical and theoretical experiences.
- 2.If you wish to further your studies, consider undertaking a Diploma of Floristry Design (SFL50115).
- 3.There are many career options for Florists, such as owning your own boutique, arranging instalments for functions and events or becoming a floral design teacher.
