What's it like to be a Gardener?
Gardeners create gardens of all shapes and sizes by tending to plants, and are trained to detect and treat plant issues. They sow, plant, cultivate and manage plants and gardens, from seeds and young seedlings to established hedges and even ancient trees.
Tasks and duties
- Preparing garden beds ready for planting.
- Raising seedlings.
- Propagating and variegating plants, including trees, flowers, shrubs, bushes and hedges.
- Watering, fertilising and treating soil.
- Pruning hedges, shrubs and trees, and lopping branches where necessary.
- Mowing lawns, and trimming or weeding garden beds.
- Spraying and treating plants to control disease or insects.
- Examining plants and trees to determine their condition and decide appropriate treatment.
- Choosing plants and materials for gardens.
- Setting out and shaping pathways from gravel or pebbles.
- Constructing fences, ponds, barbecues, pergolas, playsets and furniture.
How to become a Gardener
Formal qualifications are not required to work as a Gardener. However, a vocational qualification may assist you to develop useful skills and knowledge.
- 1.Consider developing your skills and knowledge with through a Certificate III in Horticulture (AHC30716). This course will prepare you for entry-level roles in the horticulture industry.
- 2.Level up with a Certificate IV in Permaculture (AHC42116). The course will take 10 months full-time, and there are no minimum entry requirements.
