What's it like to be an Insurance Consultant?
Insurance Consultants work with individuals and businesses to manage different types of insurance policies such as home, vehicle, income, life, professional indemnity and workers’ compensation insurance. You might approve insurance applications, manage current policies or process insurance claims. Insurance Consultants often work in call centres, but you might also work in the insurance department of a company, in a retail outlet or for a financial institution.
Tasks and duties
- Providing insurance advice to clients by discussing available policy options and helping clients find the best policy for their needs.
- Approving insurance applications.
- Processing insurance claims.
- Maintaining client file information.
- Liaising with key stakeholders such as brokers and underwriters.
- Providing excellent customer service.
How to become an Insurance Consultant
To become an Insurance Consultant, it is recommended that you have a relevant qualification in finance or insurance broking. This could be a bachelor or diploma-level qualification. Industry experience is also beneficial.
- 1.Complete a qualification in finance or insurance, such as a Bachelor of Commerce, Certificate IV in General Insurance (FNS41420) or Diploma of General Insurance (FNS51120).
- 2.Gain work experience. Consider completing an internship in the insurance department of a company, or take on a role in a call centre.
- 3.Keep up-to-date with the latest legislation and procedures. Insurance Consultants should have a strong understanding of the insurance industry and all relevant legislation and policies.
